1979 Ford Courier XLT from North America - Comments

6th Oct 2005, 12:06

"Terrible rotten lemon of a truck!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Front end needed replacement.

Front fenders rusted out completely.

Radiator constantly needed to be roded out.

Rear main oil seal failed.

Threw a rod and I took truck to junkyard.

General comments?

Underpowered and not reliable.

Uncomfortable to ride in with no cab space whatsoever.

Truly a lemon and it ALWAYS had something wrong with it mechanically not to mention it was rusting out really bad in ARIZONA!!!

Metal on body so thin you could dent it with your thumb!!!

Well, the truck was already 12 years old and had who knows how many miles on it when you got it, and you got another five years use out of it, yet almost 10 years later yer still bitchin about it.

And btw, the Courier was made by Mazda, not Ford. Ford trucks were and are made out of real steel, not the lightweight Japanese stuff.

I owned a 1979 Courier as well. It was a true deice of crap. Always breaking down, multiple no starts, fuel pumps, distributors etc. Constant overheating problems when hauling or going up long hills. Metal very thin easily dentable.

I've owned two Ford Couriers; one 1979 & one 1976, both were junk.

I've owned two Toyota pickups; one 1977 one 1978, both were very reliable good running trucks.

Bottom line; don't buy an old Courier, get something else!

I have had a 78, Two 79s, a 80, and a 81. BEST MONEY EVER SPENT! The most expensive one was $800 had 318,000 miles when we got it and has 425,000 now. Yea a little work here and there but what do you expect? All have had the 2.3 FORD engine. You can't kill them! My brother still drives his 100+ miles a day and gets 26+ MPH on back roads. And it doesn't have the annoying ticks like a Toyota engine!!

My experience with a variety of vehicles over 46 years of driving, is that you reap what you sow. Sure, there are lemons out there on occasion, but I've never had one... about 50 some cars and trucks later... many motorcycles too!
