Trouble from the start. This was a nice car, the one out of 7 days of the week it actually ran decent. Once a problem was fixed, the same thing would go wrong about a month later. We never could figure out why it kept stalling and running so nasty. I know Crown Vic's are excellent cars, but somehow I ended up with a Lemon. The Transmission had this problem of a grinding noise and not shifting itself out of overdrive till dropping below 25 MPH.
The 302 V8 has plenty of power, even for such an old car. The ride was a little rough for such a big sedan. It also shimmied and swayed around curves on gravel roads at perfectly reasonable speeds. The 18 gallon fuel tank is WAY too small for such a big car. The heater and A/C worked very well. I wish I would have kept the '83 Regal I had before this. It had virtually no power with it's crappy 3.8 liter V6, but at least it ran good.
About the stalling. it is probably the egr valve being clogged. if you get a new one you probably won't have a problem with it. what I did with my 84 vic is rip out the 302 and put in a windsor 351 and it runs perfect.
Hello, I have a 84 Crown Vic LTD, I have a 351 Windsor.
If I were you I would take the 302 out and put a 351 in cause your Dealing with a Heavy car and a smaller engine.
My engine is the best I think, ya put a 351 in.
