I am a VW mechanic by trade and my girlfriend came into our relationship with this Ford Escape and I can't talk her into selling it, so I have to fix it. She too is having the same problem with the clutch. It appears to be temperature related. The ambient temperature is above 75 degrees, the clutch will start slipping after she drives 10 miles (give or take). I have replaced the clutch, even though when I removed it it did not look worn. I have also replaced the slave cylinder for the clutch assembly. The problem still occurs and I suspect it is hydraulic. I have even gone as far as to go to Ford and talk to the mechanics in the shop to see if they had any experience with this, to no avail. I was wondering if anyone out there has had a similar situation and if so, what repaired the vehicle? I hate to throw parts at cars, but this one has me baffled. I think it has air in the hydraulic system and plan to replace the master cylinder unless someone else has a better idea.
Interesting...I've been having trouble shifting my Escape into gear for about a month, just gotten worse. First thought it was weather as we live 2 miles off pavement and have been driving thru muck for 4 weeks. Had into service yesterday and mentioned the rough shifting, told it wasn't my gear box (as I thought) but that I needed clutch kit. My clutch feels fine and isn't slipping as far as I can tell. Any suggestions? Otherwise I love my 01 Escape, have had NO problems, drive 60 miles round trip daily on dirt roads and it has 97,000 miles.
