I have had major problems with the speedometer, it wil bounce back and fourth on the highway. I changed the cable, and the whole instrament panel, still not fixed.
And the outer tie rod broke, so I had to change that, it was fairly cheap though.
And the car likes to vibrate at high speeds.
I like the performance of my car, however I am going to insatll a performance racing computer chip to up my RPM's and give me more power.
I recently bought an 96 Escort Wagon LX and found the exact same problem with the speedometer. It tends to happen when I first get in my car and drive to my destination, but on the way home, I have no problems. Whenever it does happen however, whatever it reads is 10 kms faster than the actual speed (meter reads 110 when its actually going 100) from my observations of the tach. Does anyone know how to fix this and if it could lead to damage in the near future?
I have the same problems with my 1996 Escort LX. I purchased my Escort brand new and had my speedometer start to mess up in 1998, I was on a 6 hour car trip in the cold and the speedometer made a funny noise and then started to shake up and down making the same noise. I brought the car back to my dealer to have the problem fixed, it was still under warranty. They ended up removing the whole dash board and replacing the speedometer head which resulted in the miles on the speedometer to go back to 0. (they also placed a sticker on the the car in side the door jam that stated the odometer was replaced. this was at 25,000 miles) after driving the car a few more years and many more miles the same thing happened again. With an expired warranty it will cost me about 500$ just for the part not including labor. I have not replaced the speedometer and still drive everyday like this and it has not given me any long term damage, only speeding tickets.
