1993 Ford Escort 1.3 from UK and Ireland - Comments

"Basic, low-cost motoring"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Brake pads and discs needed to be replaced at 89000 miles

Front bearings need replacement at 91000 miles.

General comments?

Overall, the car is generally squeaky and rattly.

Not up to that standards of Japanese cars.

Eg my parents' 1990 Ford Laser (Australia, Mazda based) had 280000 Km (180000Miles) on it when they sold it (owned from new) and it wasn't as worn in areas such as gearshift, suspension, or brakes.

The ride is very comfortable and it cruises remarkable well at 80mph for a 1.3 but takes a while to get up to speed, which can be a little dangerous at times (my previous cars were quite powerful by comparison).

Rust also seems to be an issue, but that may be caused by the local environment.

Cheap and cheerfull

i got mine from my dad at 80,000 miles.

Runs on fresh air and has cheap parts compared to most motors.

Everything seemed to fall apart as it crossed the 100 000 mile mark.

It needed new discs, pads, complete exhaust system, steering rack. as well as another clutch and battery.

However the trip meter only reads up to 99 999 so I guess the car was not meant to go on this far.

My first car, very cheap to run and insure, a little uncomfortable on long trips, and no performance whatsoever.

But that's not the point of this car.

It does what its made for very very well, and that's get you from a to b... cheap and easy.
