CV axles, fuel pump, water pump, timing belt, serpentine belt, starter, clutch, wheel bearing, radio, heater, air condition, lights and the list goes on!This must be the worse car ever made!Being a GT model you would think it can at least take a turn at a decent speed, but I was wrong there and probably any car will beat this one in a turn. The engine has good power when it works. The car seems real heavy when you try to push it (happens a lot) and the good news- (as they say) the rear window heater works so your hands will not freeze as you push. This car has been a bad marriage and a great divorce!
After 2500$ total costs walked away with 500$!
You did not buy a new car, you bought a 12 year old one with 172K miles on it. You have to expect parts to have worn out by then--if the car was abused, then likely a lot of parts will have worn out by the time it reaches that mileage.
The fact that you had to replace worn-out parts at high mileage does not justify calling this Escort the worst car ever made. That honor would belong to what you owned previously, the Renault GTA ("performance" model of the Alliance) which, despite being awarded "Car of the Year" in 1983, is now generally acknowledged to have been a complete piece of crap. Suspect that a lot more Escorts made it to 172K than any Alliances did.
Yeah. What he said. I know a lot of Escort owners who actually took care of their car, and that makes all the difference. Oh, and you paid $2500 for it?
I'd say you paid too much to start with. I got my 89 EGT with only 50,000 on her, and paid $1100. In over two years, I probably don't have $800 in maintenance, including new tires.
Gets 26 MPG most of the time, but I've seen over 40 MPG on the highway. No, it's not a sports car, but you can fly with confidence up a highway on ramp.
The number of old LX Escorts I see that look like absolute crap, still puttering along, is a testament to this car's fortitude. And it's THOSE people who don't take care of their cars that go around giving an unwarranted opinion.
