1999 Ford Expedition XL review from North America
"An expensive mistake"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Within 1st few months replaced defective starter.
Windshield wipers came on at will, dealer couldn't duplicate problem. Several months later recalled due to malfunction in turn-signal/cruise arm in steering column.
Recalled for tire replacement.
Took car to dealer for brakes. Replaced entire rear brake system due to fluid leaking on brakes causing premature wearing.
Took car to dealer for fluid leaking under engine. Replaced blown head gaskets, cylinder heads. Also found malfunction in equalizer bars which had to be replaced.
Two weeks later returned to dealer, still running rough. Replaced defective spark plugs (which were installed new on previous visit).
Couple months later brakes squealing. Returned to dealer and told now entire front brake system needs replacing.
Also running rough again. They are now replacing transmission and found problem with DPFE controls/EGR valve.
Squeak in dash, dealer can't find.
Lumbar support adjustment for drivers seat no longer works.
Windshield washer refill light and buzzer comes on when its full.
Service engine light comes on frequently and blinks.
Odometer display goes blank often.
Premature rust spot on hood.
Drivers side door molding falling off for past year.
General comments?
We were hesitant in spending so much for a vehicle however felt confident that we would be getting a heavy duty, reliable suv. I have spent more in major repairs and dealt with numerable annoyances in the 3 years that we have owned this monster than we have spent in the entire 10 years we have owned our Oldsmobile SUV. The truck is comfortable and roomy, but I can't afford the continuing problems.
