"An expensive mistake"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Within 1st few months replaced defective starter.

Windshield wipers came on at will, dealer couldn't duplicate problem. Several months later recalled due to malfunction in turn-signal/cruise arm in steering column.

Recalled for tire replacement.

Took car to dealer for brakes. Replaced entire rear brake system due to fluid leaking on brakes causing premature wearing.

Took car to dealer for fluid leaking under engine. Replaced blown head gaskets, cylinder heads. Also found malfunction in equalizer bars which had to be replaced.

Two weeks later returned to dealer, still running rough. Replaced defective spark plugs (which were installed new on previous visit).

Couple months later brakes squealing. Returned to dealer and told now entire front brake system needs replacing.

Also running rough again. They are now replacing transmission and found problem with DPFE controls/EGR valve.

Squeak in dash, dealer can't find.

Lumbar support adjustment for drivers seat no longer works.

Windshield washer refill light and buzzer comes on when its full.

Service engine light comes on frequently and blinks.

Odometer display goes blank often.

Premature rust spot on hood.

Drivers side door molding falling off for past year.

General comments?

We were hesitant in spending so much for a vehicle however felt confident that we would be getting a heavy duty, reliable suv. I have spent more in major repairs and dealt with numerable annoyances in the 3 years that we have owned this monster than we have spent in the entire 10 years we have owned our Oldsmobile SUV. The truck is comfortable and roomy, but I can't afford the continuing problems.

I own a 99 xlt, absolutely love it, but I have had a few bugs with mine also,

wipers - even with recall they still go off by themselves

tires - recalled

transmission - replaced at 17k

Now my odometer has blinked out a few times at 62k. Any ideas on what causes it, since its happened with yours?

Sorry to hear about the problems you're having! My wife and I own a 1997XLT and we have really enjoyed it for 75k miles. I did have a IAC go bad (idle air control valve) at approx. 50k and last month c/e light came on. Cleaned the EGR vlv. and lines going to it and light has not reappeared yet. Just paid it off a year ago and have the 'itch' but maybe it's cheaper to keep her!!

I am looking to purchase a 1999 Ford Expedition from an auction. Since I don't have an ASE Master Certified mechanic to bring with me to the auction... what should I look for before making a bid? What is the most I should pay for the Expedition in good condition with over 75,000 miles on it? Finally... any problems with the 2003 Expedition? Thanks.

I cannot believe the negative opinions you all have of this vehicle. I owned a 2000 expedition and since have bought a 2003. These vehicles are by far the best in their class, which my personal opinion is the only vehicle worth driving!!!

I find all this interesting. I've owned a '99 Expedition since october of 1999, it has the 4.6L engine. Currenlty have 90,000 miles. Original dual AC works, have had no problems. Have done 1 brake job, replaced ignition wires and plugs just recently. Had the haywire wipers fixed early on. Most vexing problem for me was the rear wiper. Which has been replaced 3 times, it finally works. Otherwise tranny and motor flawless. No squeaks rattles or bugs other than the door moldings are aging and warping. Don't look as good, but hey, she's 5 years old. Was a good investment, burns no oil between changes, starts easy, avgs about 17 mpg all around driving. No beefs from me.

I own 1999 Eddie Bauer / loaded. I bought it used two years ago with 32k...it was in mint condition. Since then I have replace electronic ignition coil, rear wiper motor, sunroof motor, and most recently a new transmission (at 85k miles). These repairs have cost me at least $5000 - and all of the doors are rusting on the bottom edge. This was a great vehicle, I bought it because I thought it was Ford Tough and I liked the third row seat. I have owned GM trucks and SUV's before with each having at least 100k miles on them and never experience the problems that I have had with the Expedition. What a piece of crap!!! It's nice of Ford Motor to charge me $3000 for a new "re-built" transmission at one of their dealerships, I could only assume that there are a lot of vehicles with this same problem.

My wife and I own a 1999 Expedition XL and have had several of the same problems listed above... phantom wipers, rear door seal falling off, poor oil circulation on starting, rear A/C control intermittently falling off, and power windows working at will. I have bought Fords for many years, but see a real decline in quality on this one.

We put 160,000 KM on our /99 Expedition, before trading it in earlier this year for a "lemon" Jeep Liberty...Overall, it ran excellent. Also had the wiper fixed. And our starter quit working within a year of purchase, and had to be replaced...The main problem I had was with the air-conditioner. There was a hole or something plugged (That the service techs didn't know about)...Consequently, we went a year with the interior smelling like stinky feet, whenever the conditioner was turned on. Engine ran perfect until fall of 2002. Engine light kept coming on..Turns out it was some simple anti-pollution valve.

Hated to part with it, but purchased when Dad was still alive, as it had the most leg room in the back compared to other SUVs...Was heavy on gas.

I ordered my 1998 Expedition and got it in October, 1997. Several recalls, but no other real problems other than needing the leather steering wheel replaced because the finish was wearing off within the first year.

It now has 59,000 miles on it and the transmission is failing. For the past 3-4 weeks, when I shift to reverse, it will either just sit there and I have to give it some gas to get it moving, or it will not engage in reverse and if I gas it, the car shudders and groans. Tonight I tried to back out of my driveway just five minutes after arriving home, and could not get it into reverse at all and gave up.

From what I'm reading on different websites, I guess I'm looking at a $4000 transmission job. Interestingly, I drove an Aerostar for 11 years and after four years, had the same problem. Luckily that car had a five year warranty and Ford fixed it. Six years out with my Expedition, not so lucky this time. My husband is a die-hard Ford man, and I don't foresee being allowed to buy any other brand of car next time, or he'll refuse to work on it.

If anyone has any feedback, please e-mail me at sandykeller01@netscape.net.

I Bought a 2000 EB Expedition used with 65,000 on it. came home one day and it was fine, went out later and it would not move and the overdrive light was blinking. Called my local ford dealer and was told its probably the tranny.

Come to find out it was just an O2 sensor. If any sensor goes out on these trucks they will not move.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. I thought I was alone.

I own a 1999 Ford Eddie Bauer Expedition and bought it new.

Until recently, in the four years of owning it I have only had problems with the front brakes, which I have had to replace them three times.

But no longer. I made the mistake of buying the vehicle from the leasing company last year and have regretted it every since.

At 58,000 miles, the front wheel bearings need replacing (about $750), the transmission must be rebuilt or replaced (about $3,000) the engine has lost power and needs work, the driver side window only goes down occasionally and the brakes need to be replaced again! The power steering is failing too.

I am seriously considering trying to dump this vehicle back

onto an unsuspecting ford dealer. Problem is I don't want another Ford!

I have just recently purchased a used 2000 Ford Expedition XLT 4x4 with 51,000 miles on it. I was driving it home from the dealership last night and it started to sputter when I was at the 65 mph mark. Then it reved to over 4000 rpm's and then quit running. This happened 3 times on the way home. I live over an hour away from my dealership so I did not drive it back. It would restart after it died though. So, as I got closer to my home it was snowing and I used the windshield wipers on delay and they would stop mid way up and down. I then turned them off and they just stopped wherever they felt like it. I have always wanted an Expedition, but now I feel like a chump. Is this normal for these vehicles?

My husband and I recently purchased a 1999 Ford Expedition (with 75,000 miles) from a private party. It has been running fine until about 2 weeks ago when the spark plug blew out of the cylinder. I have been trying to read more about the vehicle. It seems to be a common problem with these SUV's. It is costing us around $3500. It so far has taken a week and a half to repair at a Ford dealership. Ford says the part is in high demand. They have yet to locate a part. I can't believe this new of a vehicle is having this much problem. From what I have read the threads that house the spark plugs were not made long enough. Sounds like a recall to me.

I just recently bought a used 1999 Expedition. In the first week, I had to take it back to the dealer and have the coil replaced on the 3rd cylinder. Also had to have the heating pad in the drivers seat replaced. During all this, the vehicle makes a noise like you are running over a cattle grate, when the vehicle is around 1500 RPM and somewhere between 35 and 55 MPH. We took it in and they said that it was the transfer case. They replaced the fluid, cleaned the sensor and reprogrammed the computer. They told us it would run great. The first day I drove it again it made the same noise. I called the dealership and they said that it might continue to do it until the fluid unfreezes the clutches. Should only last up to 100 miles they said, but I am now at over 800 miles and it still makes the same noise. Called them back today and said well it has a Techincal Service Bulletin on this problem and there is no way to fix it. They said it is not detrimental to the vehicle, but would you want to listen to it all the time. The vehicle only has 56K. I have always wanted an Expedition, but now I am thinking twice. Has anyone else had this problem?

I purchased a used 1999 Expedition 3 weeks ago. The SUV has 60K on it.

In the 3 weeks time that I have owned this vehicle it has spent half the time in the shop.

The main problem is with the power steering. It is so stiff that it is difficult to drive with just one hand. My back muscles actually hurt after driving the car for more than 15 minutes. The steering is ultra stiff.

I brought it to a local Ford dealer and he changed the power steering pump. I found no noticeable difference.

I then brought it back and they worked for two days straight on the vehicle only to tell me that everything seems to be fine. "Some of these Expeditions are just stiff to drive" was what the technician told me.

After asking many questions it came to light that the air suspension system is somehow tied in to the power steering. I hit the air suspension override switch that sits under the passenger side dash to the off position. This made a huge difference in the handling of the vehicle.

This apparently baffled every mechanic at the Ford dealership.

Now they want to change out the air compressor to see if that helps. I can see that my vehicle is going to become a guinea pig for these mechanics and I will be financing their new training.

The truck also has a shudder when it idles. The dealership tried to fix it by reprogramming the computer. That was a $150.00 mistake. The truck still shakes.

The truck is nice and spacious. I like how it looks and it seems to have a nice ride on the highway. I only wish that Ford would start taking their customers seriously when they come in with a problem.
