I have had a 1999 Expedition for two years and am very thankful to have had the extended warranty.
Two weeks after having bought it the truck died in the middle of the road in snowy weather. It turns out there is an idle pulley that was recalled and no one bothered to replace. Basically if your car gets cold enough the car will shut down; in warm weather you will not experience this problem.
Also, my rear wiper only works when it wants to.
After 1 year of ownership the transmission was rebuilt. Like the person above, a $4000 'new' rebuilt transmission. Yeah..whatever.
Now, at the two year mark we are back in the shop for a shutter either in the transmission or in the engine...they're not sure yet. They did go ahead and give me another 'new' rebuilt tranny, and said the spark plugs were causing the shutter. After $300 spark plug replacement the truck is still doing the same thing as when I took it in one month ago. It has been sent to three different mechanics and not one can figure this out.
I absolutely love my truck, but there has to be a reason this particular year is being so difficult.
If there is anyone that has had this same problem and can offer a remedy, please email me at : tomerfaz@sbcglobal.net and please put 'ford' in the heading
Thank you.
I purchased a '98 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 4WD with confidence from a Blue Oval certified dealer in 2001 with 36,000 miles. The Expedition performed very well, much to my expectations for nearly two years.
This vehicle was without fault until 65,000 miles and the brakes became problematic, the front brakes were overhauled completely ($600) and the rotors resurfaced twice. Since the brake overhaul, due to a frozen caliper (L) I'm still annoyed with a rhythmic rubbing noise that is noticeable at 35-50 MPH. As the vehicle speed increases so does this noise. I've had this vehicle to many service repair facilitities without resolution to date.
If there is someone that has had this problem and can offer resolution, please e-mail with the fix at: jonroache@cox.net. Once this is finally accomplished I can again enjoy driving this multi-purpose vehicle.
I own a 2000 EB Expedition. As I surfed the web for information on changing out the plugs I came across this website and others that have warned of plugs blowing out of the cylinder heads. I have been very fortunate to date having no major repairs. I have experienced what I would term as minor irritating problems ie.. door lock jamming hence door not opening, and a turn signal relay outage. the more major problems have been: tires recalled in Sept 2002, and brake pads and rotor replacements, seems this big a vehicle wears pads out regularly so I've gone to ceramic composite pads to help with the wear. One chronic problem I have noticed over the last 10K-20K miles has been the intermittent lack of power from a stop. This is especially frequent during hot days of say 95 degrees or more and the engine is operating temp. I thought maybe replacing the plugs may solve the issue since the vehicle is coming up on 100K, but with the plug problems I've read about earlier I wonder...
I am a proud Ford owner... I bought a 99 EB 4x4 in 2000, and have driven it for 4 years with very minor problems. 1 brake job, and a replacement of the Air Ride Suspension compressor have kept me up and running. I did have the Wiper/Signal recall work done, and have also noticed a short in the Left Turn signal when the steering wheel is at the lowest tilt level. This problem corrects itself when you raise the wheel. The only beef I have is the onboard nav system... the compass doesn't always work correctly... I have tried to reset the compass per an article given to me by a Ford technician, but that doesn't help... it seems to work intermittently... Any suggestions? Email me at ken@Indianspringsba.org.
I have a 99 Expedition Xlt. I am having difficulty with the tire wearing unevenly. I have rotated the tires every 5000 miles, but it doesn't seem to help. I will be through my first new tires with less than 30000 miles on them. What can I do?
The transfer case makes noise when pulling a boat or just going up a steep hill. I brought it into a dealer and he could find nothing wrong with the transfer case. Prior to that he heard the same noise that I was hearing when test driving the expedition. He changed the fluids and it seem to work for a while, but the noise return (100 miles)
Proper maintenance of any vehicle will make it last accordingly. I have had my expedition for 3 years with no major problems. If you don't drive like a idiot and do proper maintinance, most of these problems would not occur. On the gearshift you can turn the overdrive off. You need to do this in town or it can wear out the clutches and now you are replacing the tranny. I have found owner ignorance contributes to most of the problems in these reviews, but these are mechanical devises and from time to time parts are defective. Also this is a 6000 pound vehicle, its not a honda civic, gas mileage is awesome for such a large vehicle.
We should start a new concept of lemon drivers. The drivers in this country are the worst. If we all used a little common sence, our vehicles would last longer than they do. If you are looking to purchase this vehicle, Inspect it carefully and happy driving.

I just traded in my 2000 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer for a RX330 Lexus. I had 3 coils go out in 3 weeks the last one leaving me stranded with my 2 kids an hour away from home. It was pouring rain my husband was unable to come and get us since he was at work and the roads were closed. Since it was Sunday the rental car places were also closed. So we drove down to the Lexus dealer and traded it in. I had just gotten it back from the dealer 2 days before. This was the 5th coil to go out on the car. Overall we had been happy with the car, but did have some of the common problems I have been reading about. I had a tire blow out on me on the freeway. Defective tires that were just being recalled. The Ford dealer didn't even know they were recalled when I took it there to asked since the CHP said it was not a normal flat.. The air suspension keeps going off even when it is sitting in the driveway for hours and the back wiper stopped working. It also developed a shaking when it idles after replacing the 1st coil. Ford said driving in the rain gets the coils wet and then they rust. I have taken very good care of this car. Oil change every 3,000 miles, rotate the tires every 3-5,000 miles. The tires seem to wear out pretty fast and the car needs to be aligned every 6 months. It is washed and vacuumed almost every week. My husband and older son have Ford F150's and seem to have no problems at all with them. My husbands is a 1996 with 130,000 miles on it. I am very disappointed in the Expedition though.
So far 75,000!tranny is great, mileage is poor, but it had 20k when I bought it and from day 1 I've gotten 10-11 mpg?normal?no problems yet that you all speak of. (knock on wood) i have followed owners manual services and it has treated me good. it is a little "sluggish" but it is a very large/heavy truck. by the way;where the hell are the spark plugs?
I have a 1998 Expedition with 75k, and have had the following issues... Phantom wipers, bad starter, and rear brake lines rotted and blew out. Otherwise no issues. Surprising that these complaints occur so often. I am very surprised about the spark plug complaint that happens so often. It is an aluminum head, low (not excessively high) compression engine. Having worked in engine remanufacturing for years I never saw this as a common problem. Why not then in the crown vic or mustang? Same cyl heads.
I have a 2002 E. B edition expedition with the 5.4L triton.
I have had only one problem with mine wich was the number 6 coil pack. I hear this is a problem with a lot of them. Once I replaced the coil pack the problem has never happened again. Gas mileage is a bit harsh, but then look at what youre driving. It weighs over 6000 pounds and has a 330 cubic inch motor in it. Four wheel drive is really nice. And it handles great on the road. I towed a trailer with 2 harleys on it and it pulled as if there was nothing there. Around town my mileage is about 10.5 to 11 mpg. On the highway I've seen 16. I would say its the best riding vehicle I've ever owned.
I have 1999 EB Expedition that I purchased in 2003. It had roughly 49K miles. After taking purchase I kept noticing a roaring noise when I accelerated. After several attempts to figure out the problem, I told the mechanic at Ford to replaced the spark plugs... guess what? The noise went away.
Now I have a new problem. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem? When I start the car up in the morning I hear no noisewhile it the car is idling, but when I push on the brake pedal and shift into drive I hear a slight clicking or clacking noise on the passenger side of car.
Any comments to what this can be?
I have a 1998 Expedition $x$ XLT with the same clicking noise. It just began when it started getting cold this month. It only does it if I don't let it warm up. Weird. Anyway, I have replaced the #8 coil at 132,000 miles, which is not uncommon for them to start going out at that mileage. The spark plugs are rated at 100,000 miles so getting those replaced will help with the mileage if anyone is getting worse than 12mpg. Next time you get tires have them check the ball joint bearing. Ford puts ungreasable ball joint bearings that will wear out, which will throw your tires out of whack and chew up the insides. Moog has greasable bearings that are lifetime warranty. Finally, I love my Expedition. It tows when I need it, it grips snow and ice like it has claws, the 4 wheel drive is top notch, and you will not beat the turning radius. Buy one and you'll agree.
I just bought a 2002 Eddie Bauer Expedition with 32K miles and in the last tow week my transmission is gone and my engine blew at the same time. For crying out loud it only had 32K miles. The front brakes were a piece of junk...don't buy an expedition. you will regret it.
I have a 1998 Eddie Bauer Expedition, 178,000 km. Had the usual common problems (coil packs, front leather seats) but overall has been a good vehicle. Looks brand new - bodywork has held up well.
Only unsolveable problem occurs in cold weather (-10C or lower). Vehicle starts then electrical system slowly shuts down - heater blower motor slows down, AWD disengages, headlights dim and so on til the ignition shuts down. Then it won't turn over. Wait 5 minutes - it starts and cycle repeats. Any insights would be appreciated.
I have had my 1999 expedition 4x4 since it was new. There have been no major problems since I have had it. I have done all maintenance on it changing oil lube etc. When I changed plugs that was another story wow 5hrs, that was at 100,00. I have a 22ft Bayliner, pulls it great. I plan on keeping it until it falls apart. This is my 2nd expedition. OKC.
