I have a 1998 XLT and today we had a major snow storm here in Colorado. I put it in 4x4 and drove about 10 miles doing great than the 4x4 failed, but the light was still on. I ended up stuck and unable to get 4x4 to kick back on. I have no idea what the problem could be, any help would be very appreciated.

As far as how I like it... I don't! You will not find a car with more room and that feels more comfortable than the Expedition, but you will also not find a car that has more problems. Everything about the Expedition is perfect and cannot be beat by any other car on the market except for the engineering. This thing has all kinds of mechanical problems, but you would never know it from looking at it!

I have had my 2001 Ford Exp. Eddie Bauer since 2002 and love it with all my heart. It is a great family car with lots of room. Big enough for the regular soccer mom and sporty enough for the cooler soccer mom --- like me. The one issue that seems to continue to baffle me is the rear windshield wiper motor that seems to go out. It started out only working when it wanted to and then completely stopped. I replaced the motor for roughly $350. Now, 14 months later it is out again. I don't think so!!! Does anyone else have this problem? I think it has a lot to door with the hatch and the way the wiper is attached. Notice the newer Exp.'s have it on the glass. Any ideas?

I have a 2000 Ford Expedition with the 4.3 engine... all in all it has been great.. I've had to replace the key less entry door pad, passenger side window motor, the windshield had a leak a few years ago and had to replace the gem module. Until this year... replaced the plugs at 100k or so.. with Bosch Platinum plugs.. ran a bit better had a little miss action, recently drove it on a 1500 mile round trip with a light cargo trailer in tow on the way home it began to spit and sputter, my gas mileage sunk incredibly low, made it home. Off to the dealer I went.. 3 coil packs 1 3 and 5.. later... still running rough.. they say nbr 3 isn't firing... want to do a compression test for 399 usd... I think I'll have it done elsewhere. The service rep says he thinks part of the spark plug is in there??? could this be??? MISSING my comfy ride...

I have a 98 Expedition with 160,000 and I just had to replace #6 coil pack, Brakes go bad on this vehicle pretty fast, but I do Love it. It still looks brand new, it's amazing how well the body holds up and it still runs like new, except for the coil pack issue which only cost me $125, not bad for 160,000 miles.

I purchased a 99 Expedition Eddie Bauer in November 2006. It had rather high mileage (110,000) but the price was right and I don't do a lot of driving so I figured it would even out in the long run. I absolutely love this truck and I have had no problems until now. Without any kind of warning, the transmission gave out. My husband managed to get it to our local transmission shop. They told me they would have to drop the tranny to even try to determine what is wrong, but gave me best case scenario: it could be the seals or torque converter ($1200-$1500) and worse case scenario: we would need to replace the transmission. Okay so now I have to get a rental car because it was a Friday afternoon and I need a vehicle. Today (Monday) the shop calls my husband and tells him the torque converter blew up and sent pieces of metal throughout the system. So just like I was dreading, we have to replace the transmission at a cost of $3300 (not to mention the cost of the rental car). The shop guarantees us the transmission will be better than the original and they are giving us an incredible warranty so here's hoping we won't have anymore problems. Even still I love this truck and I wouldn't get rid of it for the world.

I purchased a 1999 Expedition 4x4, with a 4.6 in 2001 with about 30K miles on it, it now has 160K. Even though I have often been lax with maintenance, this is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned. A line up that includes a ’63 Falcon Futura, a ’67 Galaxy 500XL, a ’73 Mustang Mach 1, a ’78 T-Bird and a ’90 Lincoln Towncar among others. It is an excellent vehicle for traveling with my family. This vehicle has taken us trouble free from northern Michigan to Texas, Tennessee and back to Michigan a number of times and I sincerely appreciate the safety and security it offers my family while traveling.

About three years ago a mechanic in Tennessee told my wife the transmission wouldn’t get us over the mountains and back to Michigan. I put some Slick 50 transmission treatment in it before we left and it’s been fine ever since. I had the plugs changed at 95K and they are ready to be traded out again, other than that, it runs great. My biggest concern is the 10 miles per gallon it gets, but then again, I didn’t buy it for gas mileage. Great vehicle! CAS.

I own a 2002 exp. Eddie B. with a 4.6, and like it more than any other veh. I have owned. The ride is smooth, the noise is low, the room is nice, and it tows everything I have asked it to. Just recently I noticed it has a miss, not when at idle or accel., but rather while trying to maintain speed, 35-80 MPH. I find this to be odd. It does have 80,000 on it so I would think it simply needs a tune-up. I was gonig to start with the plugs and coil-packs. I inspected the area where they are located, and realized, oh boy, what a pain, but when I stop and consider how much I really have enjoyed this SUV, I would be willing to do it twice. No other problems to report, other than the rear windsheild wiper works when it wants to. I can hear the motor trying to do its thing and it makes a thumping noise, but a least I know its getting power. July 6th 2007.

I have a 2000 EB with 96,000 miles and the only complaint is at start up when it wants to back-fire until is warms within a block. Then it nearly cuts off when stopped; the A/C for example doen't produce cool air unless you keep the accelator pushing 1,500 rpms. I've used carborator throat agents on it with little help. Any ideas?

My Ford 2000 Expedition is working great! Almost 80K. So far no tranny replacement, but the sway bar needed to be replaced at 72K. If you hear a knocking sound when you turn the steering wheel, then the sway bar needs to be replaced.

The A/C isn't strong as it used to be when I bought it brand new from the dealer in the year 2000, but overall, Ford has done a good job with trucks. If this truck gets older, and more and more repairs are common, I'd rather buy a Cadillac Escalade then spending 3,000.00-6,000.00 for repairs. Spending this much money this equivalent to leasing a Cadillac Escalade. Come on, you can down pay an Escalade for 5,000.00 and have no problems with it for the next 3 years of leasing.

I have a 1999 Expedition XLT 4wd with 5.4engine. I have owned it since 1999 with 140,000 miles. It has been a very good truck. Recently though I have replaced 4 coil packs. My problems: the driver side leather seat is wearing out, wiper problem fixed with recall, the rear wiper usually does not work, the odometer light goes on and off at will. No transmission issues, brakes fine, A/C has worked great, tires are fine (has grease fittings). I get better gas mileage - avg. 17/18 hwy and 13/14 town. I use Mobil 1 synthetic oil and a K&N air filter which I credit for improving my mpg. Consistently has been 4mpg better.

I have a 1999 Ford Expedition that I bought used in 2004. Since then I have had to install a new transmission and both head gaskets! Let's see: Transmission = $3500.00 + $5500.00 for head gaskets (cheap install) = $9000.00 later! And I bought it for $13,000.00 (Stupid me!)

The Air conditioning hasn't worked properly ever since I bought it: looking at an $800.00 repair job for the heater box. The front end driver's side wheel went out of alignment all by it's self. The front wheels are now dragging around any sharp turns that I make, and I can't figure out what's causing that yet! Total "LEMON". Worst Ford Vehicle ever! I will "NEVER" buy a FORD again!

I have owned my 1998 Eddie Bauer Expedition since it had 6 miles on it. It now has 185,492 miles. I love it. The one problem that has surfaced is with its air suspension. I had it fixed about 15,000 miles ago and now it is down again. The rear of the car looks like it is riding on the tires. Anybody know about this problem? The compressor seems to be fine although a little loud. It was replaced last time around. I've heard that the relay can be a problem. I just can't afford another $600 repair bill. Suggestions would be hugely appreciated. Email me at jamesfleming.realestate@gmail.com. Thank you!

Instead of getting the air ride fixed, just take it out and put in normal every day shocks, it's cheaper and you will never worry about them going out on you every night.

For those who are finding their AC isn't as cold as it used to be or have trouble powering their accessories without increasing the RPM's, check your alternator's output. If it's not producing 13.8-14.2 volts, get it replaced (easy job, $180 part).

It took me 42 minutes to disconnect the battery, remove the serpentine belt from the alternator, unbolt it (3 bolts) and unplug it (3 plugs) wiggle it out and reverse the process. Full power restored, air is ICE cold again, and no more wondering... 99 5.4L. Expedition.

1999 Ford Expedition 5.4.

For those of you having transmission problems, have the transmission serviced if you haven't already. Make sure they can suction the torque converter. I was having trouble, and by luck found out Ford installed the wrong type fluid in some Expeditions. Since the service no problems, I was experiencing a rub board effect during shifting around 45-50 miles per hour.
