The rear wiper motor quit three times,
was fixed under warranty.
Head gasket blew at 25,000 miles and again at 50,000 miles. The National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration or (NHTSA) web site has numerous Ford service bulletin's for the head gasket problems.
The aluminum motor is faulty and Ford is aware of the problem, but refuses to accept responsibility.
A close friend of mine owns a 5.4 liter powered truck that had the same problem the engine was replaced under warranty after numerous visits to the dealership.
I have owned six Ford vehicles in the past. This is the last Ford or Ford owned product I will purchase. Henry Ford where are you??? Your once proud company has lost its' way.
The vehicle is not the problem. Ford Motor Company is the problem.
I had problem with right side head gasket going bad on 1999 Expedition at 36K miles. Expensive repair and dealer claimed that engine had to be removed and reinstalled!

I presently drive a 1999 EB Expedition with 42K miles. This is the third Expedition I have owned and all (97,99&00)
have been great to drive and maintain. I learned years ago not to buy a new one, but rather wait until I found a good one owner low mileage vehicle. The ones I have bought were still under factory warranty and two had the Ford extended plan up to 60k miles. Keep the oil/filter changed and go by the book to maintain this SUV and you will not be disappointed. At least I haven't over the last six years.
I own a 98 expedition with a 4.6l, It has over 120,000 miles on it. The transmission was replaced around 50,000 under warranty, other than regular service I have done nothing to it. I am very pleased with my truck. I am a general motors convert and will never go back, I plan to buy a diesel excursion next.
I own a 99 EB Expedition I bought it used with 46,000 miles on it. At around 50,000 I had to get the rear differential replaced. And then again at 75,000. Thank god for my extended warranty. Now at 78,000 the front end is giving me trouble I had all the front suspension parts replaced (under warranty) and now when I put in 4WD it grinds and just feels like the whole front ends is about to fall out from under me. Gas mileage is terrible, this will be the last Ford product I ever own. I love the size of the vehicle it is great for my family, but the problems I have encountered are not worth it. Family trips have had to be canceled because the vehicle has been in the shop. And once again it is going back into the shop!
I had a brand new 2003 expedition, but the engine was failing. I quickly bought a chevy.
While my car was still under extended warranty, the horn stopped working. The dealer checked it out and could not find the problem. They suggested that I massage the horn pads through the steering wheel because they sometimes lose connection. I did that and the horn worked periodically for a while. Now it's time to pass inspection and my horn is not working. After another thorough going-through the horn pads were determined to be the culprit. Do you know that in order to replace the horn pads the entire airbag system has to be replaced at a cost of over $500? Do you know that my extended warranty has expired? I wonder if there is another solution.
I have a 99 expedition eddie bauer. I have had NO prob so far. The only probs I have had is the EGR (fuel sensors that determine the amount of flow to air ratio) have gone weird on me. I have spoken too many delaers, and many owners. They say the most likely cuprit is the sensor itself and not the EGR being plugged with gunk and carbon, nor the solenoid. Its the sensor for $95. It came on, went to the Ford places, went off on its own, then came on again, then went off, and its been a few wks since it has gone off. I assume it was from me installing my nice stero system and disconnecting the battery terminals at diff. intervals caused this. So far so good. The thing I HATE the most is gas. I get in town from class and back (3x/day no more than 3miles away) costs me about $14 every other day. So basically $7 a day for a 3 mile sdrive. I get with my eddie bauer 4x4 calculated by me not by the deal up top that tells you (its off by a little as any elcetronic is) 10.1mpg when I am getting 9.56mpg. It all depends on the driver, traffic, roads, etc... But I have gotten as high as about 18mpg on long stretches of hwy. Just don't try to keep up with that accord or it'll rip a cord in your wallet.
Next thing is I have 94,000 miles and have not done ANYTHING to the motor, the trannie, etc. Many people complina and wha wha wha about their car/truck, but DO NOT MAINTAIN it. They just assume it'll go. If they'd quit being lazy and irrational it would last. fix the little things before they get big, change your oil accordingly and religiously. If not then pay like the rest who do nothing, but complain. Gas is definately not its good points, but I know of another. The guy that sold me mine sold his one before that to his neighbor. The neighbor baught another and gave it to their daughter. It not has 216,000 and STILL NOTHING HAS GONE WRONG. No motor rebuilt, no trannie failure, no nothing, but general maintenance.
Its almost like the student in the class. The one who maintains his/her work does better than those who try to get things right in the end or when things don't go right and are not in their favor. Its really common sense. Take care of it, I don't care of what vehocle it is, motorcycles as well (I am a motorcycle stunter and track racer) it will last. Period. Things like the scensor are prone to this vehicle. But more often than not, its driver abuse/laziness and not the vehicle that is the most likely scenario...
Take care of it, buy it from people who take care of things and you should be fine. Little bits here and there, but nothing major...
I currently own a 99 expedition eb4x4. I bought it new after I drove my 4x4 explorer 217,000 miles with out so much as touching the motor or drive line. my expedition now has 186,000+ miles and I have never had to touch the motor or drive line other than fluids. love my truck!
I just bought a new 06 navigator with 6 speed transmission, what a pile of clunky junk that is. lots of rattles inside that I suspect will get fixed eventually. I probably should have bought another expedition.
I'm a bit confused about your unhappiness of your purchase of your new Navigator. You say it's a piece of junk & you should have bought another expedition. Expedition is made by Ford, Navigator is made by Lincoln. Aren't you aware that Ford & Lincoln are the same car makers? Did you know that the Navigator is the exact same thing as the expedition just prettier with fancier insides?
From reading all the reviews with all of the problems with these Expeditions, I would say you were one of the rare lucky ones who didn't have the major problems, until now! But they have occur-ed, & will continue to occur to the less fortunate consumer who is totally clueless of these problems until there is a recall on these piece of craps they're making!
I used to own a 97 Expedition & was experiencing the same common spark plug, coil pack problem that many others have. Also the annoying constant check engine light problem too. Ford would always check the codes & could never figure out how to fix the problem, other just to clear the code for about a week or two. How pathetic is that? They're the ones who make this product yet they can't seem to figure out what's wrong & how to fix it!
I'll never buy a Ford again! I drive a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder now & absolutely love this truck! No problems, super easy normal maintenance, the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned! Ford better wake up, if they don't want everyone running to the foreign car makers! Not only will I never go back to a Ford, but they've put a sour taste in my mouth toward all American car makers. I'm sticking to Nissan!
