2000 Ford Expedition with 150K miles.
At 75K miles, I got a P0308 code (#8 misfire) from Autozone, changed all plugs with Autolite plugs, still missing, then replaced #8 coil pack, which fixed it. At 120K miles had to replace coil pack #6 too.
I now have 150K miles on it and have been dealing with P0401 (EGR flow insufficient), hesitating on interstate. Changed EGR valve (checked vacuum hoses - changed 2 of them), changed fuel & air filters (also $10 fuel injector cleaner fluid in gas tank), changed DPFE sensor, Mass Air Flow sensor (replaced one at a time checking to see if one would fix it... STILL no fix!!! Periodically hesitates on interstate a little at high speeds 65mph, still got code P0401. Kept driving it for 3 days. Then started missing worse and getting P0305 (#5 misfire). Changed all plugs with Bosch Platinum +2 plugs. Cleared codes by disconnecting battery ground cable.
Ran real good and strong for one day. Then started missing real bad at idle and when driving slow. The missing was less noticeable at high speeds. Sputters real bad though. Got code P0401, P0308!!! Took it to Meineke for Catalytic Converter check this morning. Tested all of them and said they are still good! Thank goodness since it has 4 catalytic converters, two on each side!!!
Now what?!? I'm getting ready to check the #8 coil pack, then do some research on checking / cleaning fuel injectors. I'll let you know what I end up finding out. IF you have any suggestions, PLEASE post, since I'm tired of banging my head against the wall. Appreciate it.
I have a 98 (eb) 5.4 with 98000 on it and the truck started running really rough, and a few days ago finally the check engine light came on, so I took it down to autozone and they pulled some codes, and this is what the report said..
Ho2s 12 circuit condition (heated oxygen sensor bank1 sensor 2).
Cylinder misfire detected - cylinder #4.
1. Ignition system fault- spark plug (s)
ignition wires, coil
2. Vacuum leak
3. Injector fault
4. High or low fuel pressure.
Well to make a long story short, I changed the number 4 coil, spark plug and the boot along with all the other spark plugs, and I also fixed the vacuum leak and still have the same problem, so I went and bought the O2 sensor/ a new fuel injector and a fuel filter. After I change those things, I'll let you guy know what was the outcome, but if you have some advice for me, please post them.
Thank you... Jason M.
I had similar problem. Sputtering, lumbering, weakling power out of 97 Expy. Pulled codes and had your garden variety laundry list -
P0171 (system too lean, bank one)
P0133 (O2 Senson slow response)
P0402 (Excess EGR flow)
P1131 (lack of upstream O2 sensor - lean bank one)
First I researched these heavily on the net before making my plan. I suggest you do the same before pep boys or ford takes for you at least a grand.
First I replaced the driver side O2 Sensor - relatively easy with the special socket tool.
Then I found some vacuum leaks (under hood up between battery and windshield area.)
The I took to pep boys for diagnostics - waste of money, they made some guesses but did not even drive the truck. Said they wanted to replace the DFPE and the EGR for $550.
Thanks, but no - Autozone here I come - I did them both in 45 min or so for about $100. Check engine light back on showing P01131 - lack of O2 - OK fine, this one is a pain to get here is THE link you need! http://f150online.com/forums/showthread.php?t=315787
ahhhhh - finally, how to do it WITH PICTURES!!!.
Just finished replacing passenger side O2 sensor- check engine light went off by itself - truck runs like a champ! It has its legs back and has most of power.
I still have a vaccum leak somewhere as when I am going up hill my ac blows out the defrost vents. I WILL find this leak if it kills me. Will let my fellow posters know when I do. Good luck.
Then I.
I have a 2000 Eddie Bauer Expedition that my wife and I bought new. We have 217,000 plus miles on it. Last week I used a garden hose to wash some Arizona desert dirt off the engine. The next day it would misfire badly at 1200-2000 rpm, and the "check engine soon" light would come on. If I would accelerate into passing gear, it would run smoothly. I took it to our local Ford dealership and they said the coil on #4, #6, #7 were bad. The mechanic told me the coil packs had hairline cracks in the rubber? boot, and water penetrated into it. My wife and I absolutely love this vehicle. With it's high clearance, we navigated around large boulders while driving through stream beds to follow trails up into the mountains in Alaska, British Columbia, and Yukon Territory, putting 11,000 miles on it in seven weeks with no problems. Our service manager at the dealership told me water spray from road conditions hardly ever causes problems with the coil. Just don't wash the engine and spray water directly onto the coils.
I have a 98 Expedition, 105K and I love it!
However, this is the third time in the last 9000 miles I am bringing it in for repair. Same symptoms - hesitation and bucking.
First time was reported that it was cylinder misfire, $680 for repair.
2nd time, $275 for coil and fuel injector.
Third time - this time it's bucking and engine light was on, then off, then on, stayed on and is giving me a flash dance!
So now I am going to try a new mechanic who might listen to me when I tell him that I can smell antifreeze from time to time.
And why is it that I have to refill it 3 - 4 times a year? Where does it go? {on the coils and ruining my cylinders apparently!} Last time they tightened the clamp on it, telling me it was loose - this time I think I will bring in some of these postings and hopefully they will do it right!
Why doesn't Ford put out a recall and fix this hose? They put out the recall for the cruise control... what the heck? Love the truck - hate the chronic problem...
I just bought a 1998 Ford Expedition XL, 110,000 miles. I did not buy the warranty and the very next day the check engine light came on. I took it to Auto Zone and the code read misfire. It misfires mostly when idling or at a low rate of speed. My boyfriend changed the coil pack but there is no difference. He assumes that the person who detailed the car pressure washed the engine and ruined the plugs and wires, however the wires look brand new. Any suggestions?

I have a 2001 Expedition XLT 4.6. When I bought it from the dealer they said they just had it all tuned. Unfortunately when I got it from them it the gas level was almost on empty, so I went to the Arco gas station and filled it up with 87 octane. The next day I started having problems- engine was shaking "misfiring" and engine light was blinking for a while then went to solid light. I took it to the dealer mechanic and they hooked it up to the computer and it read misfire #4 and he told me that when you have new plugs that you are suppose to fill your tank 3 times with high premium (97) octane and then after about filling it up 3 times you can use regular.? Is this B.S.? or is he right?
1998 Ford Expedition EB 4.6 liter. Wow have spent a ton of dough on different error codes. Have had all spark plugs and wires replaced recently yet still get a flashing check engine the other day error P304 number 4 cylinder. I have read about this COP issue with anti-freeze but the 1998 I have has the coil packs rather then the coil on plug wondering if the dripping anti-freeze problem applys to expeditions with coil packs too. I wouldn't think so but maybe some one can advise.
Thanks.
I'm the previous post regarding 1998 Expedition EB with number 4 cylinder misfiring. Well I pulled the number 4 plug and put all new wires on this car. When done got a P0401 error code but the P0304 error was gone. BTW went to Kragens and got something to read the error codes. OBD II Car Reader Part Number: 3030 Only cost $69.99 and works great for pulling OBD error codes. I have had so many on this car thought it was worth investing in. My son and I re-did wires took quite a while to route them all and the number 4 was corroded onto the spark plug. Making it very hard to pop. The number 4 cylinder had much moisture around it. These 97-98 4.6 liter have a coil pack not a coil on plug so the dripping from the heater core doesn't short out the coil rather in my case caused much corrosion on wires. We had to use various extensions to undo this plug and used an appropriate rubber hose about 3' long attached to plug end to put back in so not to strip threads. BTW there is a big problem with this engine blowing out plugs. You can see literally hundreds of people who own Triton engines who have had this happen to... Consumer complaints http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/ford_spark.html. So be very careful removing adding plug to not strip aluminum threads. Apparently we left a vacuum hose off of the EGR valve when reesembling. Got the error code and fixed easily though. Never did learn the proper way to pop open those wire seperators that route the spark plug wires to appropriate coil pack. We ended up forcing them open with plyers and screw drivers. Also took the time to add another clamp to heater hose above number 4 cylinder.
In the end the car runs better then it ever has and my son and I are proud we were able to fix this. This site helped quite a bit in finding first the problem then second the solution. Something the mechanics I have taken this car and given hundreds of dollars to were unable to do. I appreciate that and also wanted to post our experience on this repair.
I own a 98 Expedition, and had told my husband that I smelled antifreeze every time I got out. He said it wasn't low and there was oil, so it should be fine. Well it wasn't, I got out and all the antifreeze was running out the bottom of my car. So they say it is a freeze plug with a heater in it, but it is at the shop getting looked at, so I'll report in again to let you know what it is.
Just thought that I would post this for the one smelling antifreeze - watch out for leaks, although I had none until it all came out, it was like a huge hose broke but it didn't. Well that's it for now.
This is in reference to the anti freeze leak...my 01 EB Expedition did the same thing last week... took it to a mechanic and he says it will be around $650.00 to fix... I have been having some trouble with the car "missing" as well... could this be related or am I in for more $$$...just paid this car off and now it is raining down on me... any suggestions out there??? Thanks!
I had the same problem with the antifreeze smell. Turns out my heater core had a leak in it. I changed that and the two T-shaped heater hoses. This was a long project requiring removal of the dash board. Now it is finally back together and I have a leak coming from somewhere behind the engine where I cannot see. I double checked the new hose connections and they are good. Does anyone know where the hoses go once they disappear behind the engine?
For everyone with the O2 sensor problems check your PCV valve. More than likely the hose has melted in the insulator boot. And everyone with an EGR valve problem, more than likely the port that the EGR valve is connected to is blocked inside the alum throttle body housing. Remove the housing and clean out the ports. I had all the same problems you guys had. good luck. I have a 1999 Expedition 4x4 AWD.
Owner of 98 F150 4.6 l Triton:
Have been banging my head on the steering wheel as well.
EGR changed - but not controller - yet.
Plugs, wires done. Helped for a week or so...
Coils twice...
Filters, treatments... they tell me to take for diags. Done it... misfire 1 and 4 changed everything...
Next I'm going to EGR cleanout thanks to above, the controller... then O2 sensors thanks to above... got suggestion for the Throttle Position Sensor??? Any ideas? Still at it... Going to put padding on the steering wheel though.
So I have a 97 e-250 with a 4.6 and I have sputtering, the smell of gas, and loss of power.
The codes I get are:
p0174
p0171
p0153
p1406
p0402
So far I have replaced the bank 2 O2 sensor behind the cat. I have cleaned the mass air flow sensor (and blew in it to see if it would stall the motor, IT DID) and replaced the EGR valve sensor with the vacuum hoses.
Still does all the same stuff and it is making me upset. The EGR seems new from previous owner.
Please help me!!
