Yeah, it's outrageous that his 13-year-old vehicle has problems. Ford clearly owes him for the problems he's had with this 3rd-hand car. Surely a Japanese brand would be much better after 13 years with the same lack of maintenance. Right. I'll follow his advice --- not!
The drive train IS Japanese. Ford uses Mazda & Mitsubishi.
No, the Explorer drive train is NOT Japanese. (and Mitsubishi is CHRYSLER!!). If Explorers HAD used Japanese drive trains we'd never have bought one. The worst experience we've EVER had was with Japanese cars. One of our Fords was traded at 325,000+ miles. Total repairs were less than $500 during the 17 years we drove it. Our Honda was sold for scrap at 99,000 miles (and had cost more than it was ever worth in repairs). Our Mazda (made before Ford took over and IMPROVED the quality) was also a total lemon. The one Toyota our family has was not a bad car, but it was boring us to death and we traded it for a Ford at 100,000 miles.
