1992 Ford Explorer Sport review from North America
"Could not have been a better experience"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Alternator became intermittent at 80,000 miles. Neglected transmission filter clogged at 90,000 miles (my fault). Would not shift from first. Replacing the filter and fluid myself fixed the problem. Valve-cover gaskets started leaking profusely in 1994. Repaired it myself for about 60.00. Several air-conditioning problems: condenser needed replacing in 1996, compressor locked-up in 1997, hoses leaked after being converted to R-134A non-CFC refrigerant, compressor locked-up again in 1999.
General comments?
All-in-all, I could not have asked for a better truck. The truck was extremely comfortable, powerful and fun to drive. I still get sick thinking about trading in my good friend. If Ford still built them like they did this one, I would buy one tomorrow. For $18,800.00 in 1992, this truck had everything except sunroof, luggage rack, and leather. Now for that price, you might or might not even get one with an engine, but at least you will get one with the rear windshield wiper motor that comes loose, rendering it useless. You can literally count on one hand the number of times it had been in the shop. Great job, Ford!
