2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac from North America - Comments

"I love my Explorer Sport Trac!!!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I have an Explorer Sport Trac. I just love the vehicle. It cost me a little more than I wanted to spend, but it has been my favorite vehicle so far.

It sits really high up so I can safely see what other vehicles in front of me are doing.

It's super convenient with 4 doors and the bed extender that's removable.

I use synthetic oil to extend my gas mileage, because that is the one thing I'm not impressed with after driving cars my whole life.

I get about 20 miles per gallon. With gas prices soaring, I'm getting rid of it.

I have had issues with the tailgate squeaking when it is up, so I usually drive with it down just so I don't have to hear the squeak.

The steering wheel started wearing really badly and I have an appointment to fix that since I have bumper to bumper.

I'm a little concerned lately because it idles a little rougher than it used to, like it needs new spark plugs. And it's way too early in its life for that.

General comments?

This truck keeps me from getting tickets. It is too much work to get it to speed. I feel like the gas is just draining out of it.

The seats could be a little better, but I'm one of those people that would like it to completely mold to give me great posture.

I have a 2004 ford sport trac and the sqeaking doesn't get any better than your 2002,only it is not coming from my tailgate its the suspension, I was told its normal. Also my steering wheel had to be replaced. Brakes have been an issue from replacing all rotors from sticking callipers. After changing that I was told at dealer that master cyl had to be changed as well, window motors looked at at least 10 times from skipping finally were changed from bad tracks when they changed that they broke my door panel, As far as comfort both front seat bolsters had to be replaced they collapsed. This truck/car should have carpet instead of rubber floor because heat is insane that comes from underneath. I do have all service repairs and I am sure I will have more. When I retire it I will put it on the side of my house and seal the holes in the bed and make it a kiddy pool because that's all the bed is good for.

I own a 1997 Ford Explorer Sport 4x4 and love it.

If you are experiencing rough idle, first check the air filter, it may be clogged with dirt. Otherwise it could be spark plugs or the injectors need cleaning. I suggest that you try a fuel additive such as BG 44K when you refuel. It cleans the injectors, and intake valves and makes the engine run smooth also give you better gas mileage and more power that you can actually feel!

If this doesn't help then you may need to replace the plugs which is not a big deal considering you can get high performance iridium plugs from Denso Iridium for $8 CDN each. Please get your rough idle looked at because it can and will turn into something worse down the road.

If you maintain your Ford it will return the favour with flawless reliability.
