1996 Ford F150 XL review from North America
"96...last year for good Ford trucks.."
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The water pump went out, but that was my fault, I ran it 4000RPM for 1\2hr in a emergency situation. On the orginal pump.
General comments?
I love it.
My favorite truck I've had so far. The good old Ford 300 inline (THE best engine ever built) is kinda slow... but not too bad, its got plenty for dusting Hondas light to light, but it really shines with a load. 7500lb trailer up hill it beat my buddys 2000 with a 5.4L.
Its got the heavier of the two trannys offered in 96, (the E4OD), its got good gears, and shifts right where it needs to.
Truck is 4 wheel drive, and on icy, snowy roads, it runs just like pavement. The truck turns into an absoulute MONSTER in 4 low, people laugh when you tell them you only have a Straight 6...till you whoop on there V8.
I pulled a 83 Chevy 4wd 1 ton with a locked up 454, and a 4sp, also locked in second gear, 6 flat tires (it was a dually) that was sunk in the mud where it had sat a good 4 inches. Hooked it up to the truck in FOUR HIGH and 1\4 throttle the thing hopped right out. The 300 is an amazing engine.
It rides good, has a good solid feel, not like a buckboard... but not like the new watered down sissy trucks either, handling is typical ford truck, heavy and vauge with little feel, but it tracks in a straight line so I'm happy.
Relitivly easy to work on.
Has good ground clearnece...haven't managed to bottome it out yet.
Auto Hubs still work...amazingly.
Overall...a great truck. Its too bad Ford don't make them like it anymore.
