1993 Ford F150 Flare Side XLT review from North America

"A good reliable truck, and it looks darn nice too"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Brakes, replaced rear drums and shoes once.

Brakes, replaced front pads numerous times.

Brakes, replaced rotors once (also had to get one turned.

Brakes, replaced calipers twice, and the brake lines.

Front wheel bearings, had to replace bearings three times due to the brakes overheating, and all the grease melting out.

Oil pan gasket broke and leaks (going to replace as soon as it gets warm out).

Torque converter died, had to get replaced and was told that it is something that happens to that year truck at 80,000 miles. Mine was at about 85,000. The shop had to bore out the fluid pump so that it could keep up with the torque converter supposedly a design flaw.

Fuel regulator, just had this changed due to recall. Ford said it could rust out and leak. (took the Ford dealer 4 hours to figure that I needed the regulator and to order it).

Exhaust manifold leaks, exhaust fumes come into the cab if you turn the heat on. Being that this manifold uses a slip joint and not a donut gasket it leaks. I tried to get the muffler shop to straighten it out so it won't leak but their efforts only lasted a couple months. The only remedy for this problem is to replace the manifold or to do what I did and get a header made. The header will be going on this spring when it gets warmer. If your going to replace it might as well get some performance out of it.

Catalytic converter, replaced.

Windshield washer control is tempermental, the delay wipers work when they feel like it.

General comments?

The only real complaint I have had with this truck is the brakes. I have had trouble with the brakes since I bought it. Pull to the left, pull to the right, then shake. This truck had a recall on it for the brake system. I took the truck in and the dealer told me they replaced the calipers, the rotors, the pads, the shoes, and they turned the drums. The next week when I was having the same problem again I took it back. The shop tech took me for a test drive, and told me "This is what you need to do when you have this problem, (now keep in mind these are new brakes supposedly) take it up to 40 and lock them up" I sat there with my mouth open. Come to find out later on when I was still having problems, they never replaced any of the parts.

All I can say about this is that if you can turn a wrench at least half a turn, get a Chilton manual and do the work yourself, it's a lot cheaper.
