Sorry, guess I fat-fingered on the engine size. I apologize for the error, and for not checking my typing before submitting. - Sonny.

My Ford has been good to me. It's a 1992 4.9 Liter In Line Six with 185,000 miles on the original engine. Just yesterday I had to change a water pump. Last year I changed the starter and fuel pump in rear tank. That's all I have had to replace beside the normal maintenance items such has spark plugs, Wires, Brakes, Belt, tires, etc. I have tried to take care of the truck by doing routine maintenance, but I have not gone overboard with it. For the most part I have not taken care of the truck like I should have. It still gets around 17 Miles per gallon and has decent acceleration for a 300HP 6 cylinder (It is no race car by no means.) The biggest thing the truck could use right now is a paint job since it has been sitting out in the weather since it was built in 1991.

You know Ford has to make a great truck because any time a heavy duty application such as ambulance service, police cars, Taxies, construction what do you see the most of FORDS not any other brand. That says it all!

I don't know why all of you have so many problems. I bought my 92 f-150 flare side 2 years ago. It is awesome. I have yet to have any severe problems with it. I bought it for 2500 and spent maybe another 300 on it. It's great, I love it.

I bought my 92 flareside at 157000 miles, and it has nickle and dimed me nearly to death. But the alternator that I burned out at 12 years old was suspect to a 800 watt amp I had it running, silly me, but it lived its life. There is nothing like having 2 power door locks that only go one way (and none some of the time) and 2 power windows that don't go up and down, they just make an aborable grinding sound. Oh and the tranny that had a hairline fracture in the tail drive shaft housing? the gentleman who rebuilt my tranny was as baffled at that as I was... and he had been an ASE certified technician speciallizing in transmissions. but for all the pain and heart break of my FIRST Self bought vehicle the 302 is a monster on an engine I will give FORD that much just hope the other stuff has a quality upgrade real soon--- CHEWAH.

Your unpleasant experiences are NOT typical. Unfortunately, you can find sad stories about Fords, Chevies, etc. However, the domestically produced product is just as good as the imported, and I've owned both. I've got no axe to grind with the Japanese or anyone else; I've bought their products and my current daily driver is a Mazda 3 built in Hiroshima. My last daily driver was an import too.

I've owned seven Fords, and generally I've found that you do have to fix them now and then, as you do with ALL marques. I've owned new ones and poorly maintained used cars, and, in general, I've found that even when I couldn't afford to keep them running well, I could darn sure keep then running well enough.

I've owned 16 cars/trucks and 4 motorcycles, and the only time I was ever left stranded, one time, it was an import.

Now, thank goodness, I don't have to drive junky cars. And I always maintain may cars very carefully and thoroughly. And I don't get stuck.

The most repair-intensive car I've ever owned? An import. A Mazda Miata, built in Hiroshima. Clutch, AC, brakes, you don't want to know. And it doesn't matter, because no whatever I spent it was the best automotive experience I ever had. And I spent a fortune.

Anyway, I hope you have better luck with your next car, and I would hardly expect you to buy another Ford (just like I'll never buy another Buick).

I've bought a brand new 1992 Ford XLT Flareside (4WD 5.0L). It now has 185K miles now and other than the normal replacement items (plugs, wires, distributor cap, tires, brakes, muffler, S-belt) I've had to put 3 starters on it, an alternator, and just this week a TPS (throttle position sensor). I live in the northeast (along the shore) so rust is a problem, but it is for all cars here. The truck has been super reliable and I would definitely buy another one. I'll probably pass it along to one of my kids one day.

Its not a 300 hp inline six...

It's a 300 cubic inch inline six, a massive six cylinder by today's standards.

The good thing about the engine is its torque and reliability. The 302 cubic inch v8 is more of a revver.

I bought a 1992 ford flareside with the 302 V-8 and 2 wheel drive... I change the alternator, starter, tps sensor, 2 oxygen sensors, powersteering pump, I also bought it with 170,000 miles.. I put a 4 inch suspension lift and custom ladders bars. its been 40,000 miles since then and all I've done since is regular maintenance. no horror stories no breakdowns, nothing. I had a 1994 chevy 1500 for 1 year (i bought it in 1999 with 90,000 miles) before a had major engine problem and the paint, my god, you could literally firmly smack my door with a hammer, and watch the paint crumble.. Ford is a reliable truck, and I'm sure chevy is reliable too. your vehicle is only as reliable as the work you put in it.

I am looking at a real nice flare side, but the motor has a bad valve in it. How hard is it to fix this problem. The motor is a 302cid. Like said it is a real nice truck. please help me. Thank you.

I would'nt suggest removing the head if you are uncomfortable with your mechanic skill, it is going to cost over $1000 when its all said and done if you took it to a shop. If you can do the work yourself remove them and send them to a good machine shop and see how expensive that will be to have them do a valve job along with replacing that valve or all valve's.

I have a 92 flareside 5.8 liter 87,157 miles on it, it runs great it's a beast, but my god the doors and power window motor have given me quite a time, you have to keep adjusting the power window motor so it won't get stuck or get too loose, and the plastic cams in it when they go out makes it sound like a machine gun when you try to put it up or down.

I have a 1992 ford flareside with a 5.0 motor. I love this truck. Other than the windows going up and down a little slow the truck has been great. I have owned it for 12 of its 15 years. For those who have not had the pleasure of trying to find parts for the back half (bed, bump, etc) of this truck I say good luck. These parts are no longer available through ford and I have had no luck in the wrecking yards. With this said, I am looking for the driver side, rear, plastic step cap. Mine was STOLEN off my truck in my driveway. If you know of one out there please leave a note.

Keep your eyes on your truck!!!

Niether will go up or down, is it common for the motor to burn right out, or is the switch usaully the problem, the power locks also only work on the passenger side, any suggestions??

How funny. The person who stated that his door locks didn't work, his windows make a weird grinding noise and his transmission has issues just described PERFECTLY everything that is wrong with our truck. A coincidence? I think not.
