"Buy something older, they built them better back then"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Brakes replaced twice on front-end.

Door ajar light always stays on.

Overhead light stays on.

Ford installed alarm system malfunctions.

Windshield wipers and fluid intermittently come on.

Gas mileage no where near EPA standards. Truck gets 7.5 miles per gallon. (on highway)

Truck was getting 16 on highway, but over time fell to 7.5. The truck since has been given the full treatment to bring it back alive nothing works.

Spark plugs

Coils over each cylinder

Fuel filter

Positive crankcase ventilation valve (PVC)

Oxygen sensors (O2)

Mass air flow sensor (MAF)

Generation II K&N air filter system

Tornado

Dual exhaust.

Door or window sounds like one is always open.

Four transmissions. (E4OD)

Drivers side mirror rattles.

General comments?

This truck is always getting something fixed every two weeks. Truck looks nice with lot of add-ons It has little power for passing. The seats are buckets and are very comfortable. The engine drinks gas and the performance is never there. It also has nice 17" wheels and tires, but nobody seem to build a tire for them other that street tires.

This truck lives in Anchorage, Alaska and I would rather drive something older that runs and doesn't break, than drive a truck that looks beautiful sitting in my mechanics' parking lot broken.

I agree totally. I found this web page because I was having similar problems with my 1998 Ford F150 with the interior light staying on and the alarm going off on its own.

I also Agree totally! I have a 1998 Ford F-150 XLT 4X4 with a lift, looks great! But whenever there is a truck payment there is also a garage payment too. This week I have to get my windows fixed... I went out yesterday morning to take the girlfriend on a cruise around to a few lakes to see what was happening around and my power windows just started blowing the fuses. I would replace the fuse and have the vehicle in park and they would work fine.. but as soon as I put the vehicle in gear and started to drive...2 minutes later the fuse would blow. Anyone have any ideas on what this might be? Any ideas will be appreciated... besides selling..I'd never get my money back now! LOL. Reply to jasonmackey1@hotmail.com.

Thanks!

The 1998 f150 did not have separate coils over each spark plug, they had two direct ignitions that handle four aside, running regular spark plug wires directly to the plugs. They started the coil over in 1999. You could not make this mistake unless you didn't actually own a 1998 f150. Makes you wonder about the review?

The big 5.4L V8 had coil over plugs the 4.2 V6 and 4.6L have coil packs and wires. Ben that way when the 97 came out I Have a 98 F-150XL 4x4 with the 4.2 V6 5 speed std. love the truck put 50K 0n top of the 50K she came with and we have put in harder days than most ton trucks do and only had a few small problems and good preventative maintenance.

I own a 1998 F150 4x4 with a 5.4. Started having engine problems. Since then I have done a complete tuneup, 3 coil packs, and cleaned injectors. I still have an intermittent engine miss. Any thoughts?

It is Aug of 2009 and I just bought a 1998 XLT extended cab 4x4. 180,000 miles on it. I hope - by reading all this - that I got one of the good ones and not a bad one. If there is any problems that I should watch out for - please let me know - This is my first Ford truck - and this large.

Thanks.

I own a '98 Anniversary Edition 4x4 Supercab. I run off stock rims and 285/70/R17 and they rub. 275 might work on a 16 inch rim, but not on a 17. So I lifted the front 1.5 inch and the back 3. Hard on gas, but my Triton hauls. In northern Ontario you need all the help you can get. NICE & GOOD LOOKING TRUCK!!!
