1985 Ford F150 XLT review from North America
"Trustworthy- has not failed me yet"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The Previous vehicle (1984 Subaru was a decent car for the time I had it, 4WD on demand was useful during those snowy Maine winters. until wife drove it then, the camshaft snapped, had engine rebuilt then a week later it was rear ended- time to buy a new vehicle. well I got myself this f150 XLT SC. Didn't get to drive it much had to go over seas for a year so it sat. had engine rebuilt at 157000 miles it was getting 5miles/gal figured previous owners did not take care of it very well. last year the rear differential exploded replaced with 3.55 much better mileage now. was 18/12,now 23hwy/15city.
Replaced the rusted out exhaust. and burned out alternator. replaced shocks,
stopped the leaking tranny pan and replaced leaky radiator. replaced instrument cluster with one that has a tach and more gauges, better than having those little lites. replaced rear one piece window with sliding window. AC doesn't work, but with all these windows, who needs AC. modifications in progres- upgrading rear springs with f250 springs. class V hitch installed. two more fuel tanks are on order- one to go opposite of the side tank, and a extra capacity tank to go behind the rear axle. total cap 80gal. figure I can go halfway across the US without refueling. new custom exhaust is on order. Will have to repair the AC this next spring- the hoses are OEM from 1986 and I guess leaking like a sieve.
General comments?
Trustworthy vehicle. will keep it till it dies.
Had NO rust until I had to move from ND to Nebraska- they use too much salt here.
Haven't gotten stuck yet-although there were a few times that were close.
Bench seat needs to be replace with chairs... bench seat needs to be in the back where the jump seats are.
