My head gasket is out after normal usage and the 4.9l are supposed to be great motors?
The clutch had to be replaced 5,000 miles after the previous one. (over $350, replaced myself)
Slave cylinder is bad right now and is eating up the most recent clutch I put in. (SPENDY!!!)
The differential seal started leaking fluid all over after I went to school and came back? Why, I have no idea?? (Not a very spendy repair thank God)
I had to replace the front coil springs, shocks all around, lower ball joints, and tie rods. Which cost me over $850!!! And the steering is still loose!!!
The truck seems like it has 4 cylinder power!! Its the doggiest thing on the road. When I'm going up a hill with my 4 wheeler in the bed I have to downshift to 4th gear!!
When you go over the smallest bumps on the road the dash makes a cracking noise like plastic is breaking or something?
The leaf springs in the short box F150 are weaker than a Ford Rangers. Its so pathetic!!
The 5 speed is definetly a downgrade from the reliability of the 4 speed tranny.
Also for the differance in gas mileage (1-3mpg) the 5.0 V8 is definetly a wiser choice for more power and just more all around useage.
The reason I bought the vehicle was because it was so clean for how old it was and also it was in the mileage and price range that I was looking for.
Overall I would have to say that I should have spent the extra grand and bought a silverado which holds its resale value more and also looks great and performs well. This has definetly been a lesson for me and those ford products. I guess the saying 'you get what you pay for' is an understatment for these vehicles.
Unfortunately I think the previous owner beat the hell out of your truck and didn't take care of it, and now you're stuck with his dirty work. Remember, things can be reliable under normal use, but enough abuse will ruin even the most reliable designs.
Ya, obviously the guy before that had the truck beat the crap out of it. The straight six motor with the 5 speed was the most bullet proof combo you will ever find. My brother had the same truck and he barely had to do anything to it. He got 13 mpg and that truck had great torque! More than any 302!
He did have to replace ball joints once and the back shocks, but that's normal wear at about 100 000 miles. And a friend of his has over 300 000 miles on his, which is the straight 6 with 5 speed. And he has no complaints!
Sorry but you must have just got screwed, cause that's the only explanation for what has gone wrong with your truck. Or it was just made on a Friday.

Or it was just because it was a Ford to begin with.
