1997 Ford Fiesta Flight review from UK and Ireland
"Finally laid the stoic mark 3 fiesta to rest"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
none so far
General comments?
Most shocking thing is the fact the odometer has 5 digits - they didn't expect this car to do more than 100k miles! very low self esteem on Ford's part there.
Uncomfortable seats in front, to the point of making me use a cushion to support my lower back.
Engine delays a bit before giving its full revs, but can keep on chugging happily up to 6k without a problem if needs be.
Gearbox easy to shift, but a safety lock for engaging reverse would be handy (push down on stick or lift up the stalk for example.
Cabin is pleasing if a little cheap: the hard plastics are definitely a reminder this is no Volkswagen / Seat. no LCD-electronic display for mileage as in most marques of this age (certainly all German/French rivals). no backlit speedo/tacho - relies on bright front illumination which can be a bit overpowering at nighttime*
*ford have fixed this by making the light dimmer in later models, and fitting a digital odo or so I have heard.
Some of the edges of the plastic interior illustrate the injection-moulding process with which the dash and trim are made (see left and right hand side demister vents)
Enormous boot, could have done with carpeting the back of the split-fold seats though.
The rear bench floor does not move forward to allow for the split-fold backs of the seats to fold fully flat.
Audio system alright, speakers are dire (very dire) especially the size and quality of the rear ones. disappointing.
Lovely clutch, sharp brakes at all, but the highest speeds. shame about the delay with the accelerator.
Tiny wing mirrors take some getting used to, love the removable / tiltable sunroof - very quick and simple to remove and replace. shame it didn't come with a high-rise central brake light.
Lack of ABS as standard typical for the sort of price the car was when new. good kit for the price, though. love the electric windows and electric tailgate release button (shame central locking doesn't control boot or filler cap). overall a good car - *for the money*
