2000 Ford Focus Zetec ESP review from UK and Ireland
"Superb handling, brilliantly engineered sport hatch"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Only a front brake caliper so far, nothing else seems to be on its way out (touch wood!!). The clutch and gearbox are maybe starting to show their age, but only as expected as they are the originals, as is the engine!
General comments?
I bought this car at auction at just about bottom money for a Focus. Although I was taking a risk as the car has done so many miles with no real service history I decided to go for it as it was too much of a bargain to miss out on and I'm really glad I did.
The engine is eager and responsive, having nearly 130bhp on tap. The gear change still has a nice feel to it despite the age of the car and isn't clunky and vague like some other similar small hatches I have driven (Peugeots in particular).
Although the Focus can't really be considered sporty or unique, I think the 3 door looks smart - especially with the 16 inch alloys this model has as standard. It looks even better with the front and side indicator lenses replaced with clear ones.
The best thing about the car is the way it handles. I haven't really taken to the traction control this car has as standard as I find it too nannying, but the independent rear suspension setup makes the drive excellent. I had an 05 plate Astra about a year ago and this is far more enjoyable to drive - it really puts a smile on your face and I would definitely recommend one. Just be warned, you will only get around 30mpg on average although insurance is only group 8/20.
