2003 Ford Focus Zetec TDCI from UK and Ireland - Comments

"Fun, but as reliable as a chocolate tea pot"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The engine keeps cutting out in low gears, sometimes leaving me stranded pulling out into traffic. This has required four major trips to the dealer and is still not fixed, even after an engine rebuilt two months from new.

Electric windows failed, repaired, but now squeake loudly.

Radio failed.

Windscreen split after one week when not being driven.

Tyre-well in boot filled with water after two weeks.

Front and rear passenger side foot wells filled with rain water and came back to very mouldy smelly car.

Engine occasionally judders while driving at constant speed without touching the clutch.

General comments?

Despite all the faults this is still a well designed car. The handling is impressive for a car in its class and is very well balanced. The fuel economy is good at around 50 mpg on a long drive and even the estate is fun on a windy road.

In the Zetec, even with the climate pack, there is a lack of an outside temperature reading which, while a minor point, is something I miss, especially in the winter.

If this car had been owned by myself instead of being a lease car through work I would have been able to take my grievances straight to ford and I image would have had the car replaced long ago!Otherwise I would have parked it in the fountain outside the ford headquarters.

My colleague's Ford focus kept stalling; the car was repaired under warranty. The following were done to fix it.The fly wheel sensor was replaced and the voltage of the loom feeding the sensor was increased from 6 to 12 volts.

My car has also had the stalling and cut out problems. It has not been resolved after 9 months. The dealer will not look at the car unless the computer module says there is a fault!

Mine's just been collected by the lease firm. 115,000 miles in 3 yrs and not one of the problems you've mentioned.

In fact, apart from an auxiliary belt tensioner at the 75,000 mile service it needed nothing apart from routine consumables and service items. The most dependable and reliable car I've had, and that includes our "second car", a 2004 BMW 330i Sport which has had two unscheduled dealer visits in 18 months.

Cheap interior and "image" apart, a very hard car to fault. Great workhorse and surprisingly good fun to drive.
