2004 Ford Freestar SES from North America - Comments

"The Ford Freestar is a piece of junk"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Wheel bearings went bad at 30,000 miles.

Pinging noise from engine with no fix since 12,000 miles.

Front rotors bad at 22,000 miles.

Rear calipers bad at 28,000 miles.

Transmission went out with no warning whatsoever at 98,000 miles. I have read that this is common anywhere from 40,000 to 100,000, so I guess we are lucky it lasted as long as it did!

Paint on stereo/CD buttons wore off, so lights shine through at night. No other car I have ever had did this.

Around 20,000 miles, the rear seat latch to fold seat into the floor cracked and is now unusable.

General comments?

Our Ford Freestar has been a piece of junk from the very beginning. It appears from Internet websites and blogs that there are known transmission issues, pinging issues, and wheel issues with the Freestar. However, the Ford dealership acts surprised like mine is the first Freestar to ever have a problem.

If you waste your money and buy a Freestar, make sure you get an extended warranty that covers the majors!!! In my opinion we were ripped off by thinking a good name brand meant something. Better off buying a Kia or Hyundai - at least the initial price is less!!!

Boy, I thought my Freestar was the only van with these problems. It is a nice van when it is not in for repairs. $4,000 later and waiting to figure out the pinging noise. Someone interested in a 2004 Freestar?

Didn't you have a warranty?

It is my belief as in many of the thousands of readers on this site that you're describing "bugs" that come out of NEW vehicles and are covered by warranty. I'm sure you complained to your dealer, did you not? Because any Ford dealer would have replaced it with a NEW part for you and you would be all set. That is why manufacturers have warranties with brand new cars. And if your repairs were in the low miles as you said they were, then the repairs would have been 100% covered by the dealer and you would not been on this site complaining. Something tells me that your repairs were way beyond the warranty limit.

I owned an '03 Windstar that made the same pinging noise. I just ignored it. But the van still cost me over $6,000 in repairs over its lifespan of 3 years (was junked at 105,000 because of a trans. failure.) I bought a Honda and I'm not looking back.
