1998 Ford Ka 1 review from UK and Ireland
"Cheap first car, but better ones available"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Nothing went wrong with the car.
The car was involved in a heavy crash which wrote it off. A BMW E92 320 pulled out of a minor onto a major when I was coming down the road. My right front quarter collided with his rear left quarter at about 30mph.
My KA was a total write off, his BMW had a small dent in the rear.
Suffice to say they don't do well in crashes.
General comments?
I bought the car as it was IG 2 and for my first car I thought only about insurance. What a mistake this was. After this I had a 1.25zetec feista, which was so much better.
The 1.3 pushrod engine is terrible, it only revs to about 6,000 rpm, however this is a guess as there is no rev counter in the KA. The handling is OK, you can really chuck it into roundabouts, but it can be lethal in the wet because of the skinny tyres.
The brakes are pretty terrible if I'm honest, and they lock up with ease.
Inside it's more comfortable than my old fiesta and my current corsa, but not as good as my old Mondeo.
The top speed was only just 100mph, but what do you expect from 60bhp.
Overall I'd say get something else as your first car, a 1.25 fiesta is so much better, handling, speed and internal space.
