What things have gone wrong with the car?

Beware the catalytic convertors on this car. They die prematurely.

There are 3. One each side of the engine since it is a 'V' shaped engine and one at the bottom of the downpipe below where the two separate ones join.

On testing the car one convertor blew - it sounds like a bag of spanners rattling below your car. This was replaced before I picked the car up after purchasing.

Crucially 12 months later the same thing happened. This time it was the other side of the engine that went.

A week later it happened again, the one fitted by the dealer after my test drive.

Expensive to fix.

Very annoying bug in the engine management system makes the engine revs climb on cold start up. If you put your foot down before the revs have 'settled', after about 3/4 minutes it compromises acceleration severely.

General comments?

Very nice performance and the throaty V6 encourages your right foot, but the resulting low 20's mpg moderates your driving unless money is no object.

Reasonably good handling and ride for a mid 90's car although the gear change a bit 'rubbery'. Steering well weighted and precise although has a tendency to understeer if pushed into corners too fast.

Watch for the 24V specification as it is poorly kitted out as standard.

My 150,000 mile 24v burns little oil and is as fast as it was 100,000 miles ago. For a family saloon it handles OK, but there is limted legroom in the back. It has a bearing rumble from the front. Both wheel bearings have been replaced, but it is still there. Does anyone have a similar story to tell.

Ref to mondeo bearing

same thing in mine and it only has 60 000k bearings collapsed suddenly and ended up needing a new casing perhaps that's the problem

i find a few strange noises form the front from time to time other than that being my first mondeo it is unbeatable for second hand value and good to drive

although liking the rumble of the v6 can be thirsty work.

Totally agree with comments, an excellent family car that handles and drives to almost sport standard. re the cats I had the down pipe cats removed and a later Probe main cat fitted. Passes the emission test for MOT and seems to improve performance!
