1994 Ford Mondeo GLX from UK and Ireland - Comments

4th Nov 1997, 00:00

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Replaced exhaust mount due to excessive knocking.

Front electric window relay packed up.

Front suspension bush split.

Rear wash on wash/wipe stopped working.

General comments?

Generally I have been impressed with the Mondeo - especially its handling. Get it out on a winding B road and it feels like a rear wheel drive car.

Unfortunately Ford's questionable build quality has let them down. The reliability and running costs are low because we are surely not only talking about whether the car starts on a cold morning and how much petrol you put in? The car was 2 years old when I purchased it from a main dealer (Stormont Ford, Tunbridge Wells, Kent) and in the first year I spent approx £800 getting things fixed, all of which was not covered under the warranty. Not really acceptable for a car that was less than three years old with a far less than average mileage. The dealer was just not interested hearing about the problems I was having. A split suspension bush after 35k miles seems ridiculous to me especially since a full service was performed before delivery. When will I need to replace the other side?

The rear washer has failed on every car I have owned, and it is usually just a blockage in the end part where the water is expelled on to the rear screen. just take out the bit of plastic and clean it with a needle:then it does for another 20k :)

Blimey...my wife and I both have 1994 mondeos...her's is a lx hatchback... mileage 147000 and mines a glx estate... mileage 132000.both cars had approx 65000 when brought and apart from general wear and tear i. e tyres, exhausts, batteries and brakes have proved 100% reliable.. i can't fault the mondeo.. what else is as affordable and practical to buy for the money? we will buy another 2 as and when the time comes... my boss has a 1998 model that's covered 190000...again no probs... so unless yours was clocked. it seems you've just been very unlucky mate!

I had a 1994 Mondeo TD GLX with 168k on, and it was great... apart from me not changing the cambelt...BANG!

Shame, decent car, I would have still had it now, no doubt passing 180k.

I too have had far too many quality problems with Mondeos. Ford need to get their act together.

Japanese and Korean product are far less hassle free and easier to own.
