1995 Ford Mustang GT Convertible from North America - Comments

"Too many flaws, AND not even that fast!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Piping on edge of convertible top scraped and cracked due to design of retraction.

Computer kept sending code for "overdrive not engaging properly" (it was/did)

Engine light came on regularly, and usually blinked out within 10 minutes. When retrieving codes from the computer, no problem codes came up.

Consistently balked when gas first applied. Had to "ease on" to the gas pedal. Repeated trips to dealer and testing revealed no problems.

General comments?

So the problems above ain't all that bad, and the car never left me totally stranded. The few times it really gave it there it ran enough to at least get to the next station and park it.

But that's not my main issue with the car. It's really just a general piece of junk:

The car cornered so poorly it was actually dangerous. The slightest bump while cornering would lift the rear end up and it would try to come around along side you!

The suspension was generally just uncomfortable. Extremely bumpy and unstable. I'll accept a "taut" suspension in return for performance. This car's suspension went beyond taut to spine-fracturing and it gained no handling for it!

The seats looked like they came out of a 1970's mercury, just unappealing.

The interior fixtures were simply cheap and shoddy. While nothing ever "fell off" most of the controls were very loose and most of the labeling had rubbed off before it hit 50,000 miles.

But the damning final test was that this car didn't even do what a Mustang MUST do: ear-popping acceleration in a straight line. This is a car that, if nothing else, is supposed to apply 5.0 litres of V-8 power to the rear wheels and rocket you forward at entirely too rapid a pace.

But nooooo. Somehow Ford managed to get only marginal performance outta the big pushrod engine. Hell, the car could be taken out by a kid in Mom's Nissan Altima, if he had half a mind. I'm no street-corner racer boy, but it was literally embarrassing how pokey the car really was.

So do you really own a V8 5.0L Mustang? I mean, I have used my bro's 5.0 V8 Mustang and never had those kind of problems with the suspension and all.

I smell a ford hater here. I own a ford mustang GT 95. it has 80000 miles. it runs like a dream. the top goes up and down with no trubble and with the strut bar it handels like a champ. I love the 5.0. 2000$ in upgrades and you can eat a vette.

I got a 95 Cobra, owned it day one till now. Awesome car.

a little thing or two over the years like the pick up coil inside the distributor. One of the wires got soft from heat, and occasionally when hot caused the engine to run funny. Took a while to figure out. But nothing else in over 13 years.

The car never failed me, and at the worst of it always took me home, never towed.

Power; well it's not all about the car, it's the driver too. So if one drives it worse than a housewife in a Nissan Altima, it's not car that needs blaming.

Lots of power, beat anything that ever pulled up to me. Suppose LT1 and LS1 Vettes could be a problem, but again for the cost I'll spend another 5 grand and eat them too.

Cornering, I apologize, no American muscle car was ever overly good at it. A Mustang's weight distribution is 70% front, what do you expect? It's an in line racer. I drive mine like I own it and have taken HWY ramps at over 80MPH, have I ever wiped out... Sure, specially when first got it, had my ass end come around on me few times. Is the car to blame? No, as a driver you need to feel the vehicle, and if you can't well get your butt into an Austin MINI.

Luxury, excuse me my cobra was worth $28000 Canadian in 1995 came with leather, fully loaded with whatever was available then I have no complaints. If you need cushy ride, get a Buick so you don't lose any wrinkles on your B$@@.

Mustang was always an affordable sports car, so excuse Ford for not to supplying you with all the comforts of your kitchen. Do I get tired driving it? Sometimes, but I also run it once or twice a year to Texas or Florida (Live just outside Toronto).

Winter driving.. well who the hell wants to drive it in the winter? For the price of winter tires get a winter beater. Or as I have done last year, got me a winter Beamer LOL 530I BMW. Nice car, has heated seats LOL. And as I always said, I only sell my Mustangs to insurance companies, if things did not work out as planned.

This Cobra is my second one. Had a 94 GT before that rolled 5 times, all got out with nothing but a seat belt bruise. Still swear that if it wasn't for the car, I'd be dead and so would 3 friends of mine. The car by the way stayed in one piece - all windows broke, but it held and no body panel flew missing, though I could not find the license plate :). Live some, learn some.

Old ladies in Buick Road Masters, got bless their wrinkled soul. Like the guys said, just because you managed to find a total piece of $^%# that someone made that way, by not taking care of it, doesn't mean it's the car.

Finally, Mustang rules, and it's not just the car, it's the feeling and the other Mustang drivers that make the experience of owning one an awesome one.

I pretty much have to agree with everything commenter 13:04 has to say.

I've owned 7 Mustangs over the years and all have pretty much been flawless. I've had 8's, 6's and even a 4 in the '70's. The 5.0's were fast, but rode HORRIBLY. Most did handle reasonably well.

My current 2007 4.0 V-6 is the best yet. Still has a very harsh ride (but better than my previous 5.0). It is a tad faster 0-60 and MUCH faster 0-100 than my 5.0. It is mildly modified (cold air intake, etc.) I'm actually very pleasantly surprised by the 4.0. It is much more than I expected and I saved 5 grand over the V-8 and 40% on my insurance. This will probably be my last Mustang because of the harsh ride. I'm getting too old to have what's left of my teeth jarred out. Maybe I'll opt for the better riding Pontiac G8 next time, or a Taurus.
