2002 Ford Ranger Edge review from North America

"I can believe how they ruined such a previously good vehicle ('93 XL)"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Idler pulley.

Pinion seal leak.

Rubberized coating on stereo/heat control panel peeling.

Needs very frequent alignments ate the

first pair of tires in 10,000miles.

On acceleration when tack goes above 2500rpms loud rattling noises from engine.

Parked on a hill the other day (didn't engage parking brake) and noticed car ratcheting down hill so engine compression/seals going or gone?

General comments?

I previously owned a 93 Ford Ranger extra cab, 4.0L manual, 4WD, XL.

I ran Grey ('93 Ranger) into the ground 200,000miles only problem was in the last year (2002) starter was replaced multiple times and it (Grey) started burning oil and anti-freeze, it still sold at auction for $1,500.

I rushed out to get another Ford Ranger, picked the Edge because I have a dog and wanted the vinyl floor option what a mistake that was.

I like the vinyl floor, but have no idea why they wouldn't have paired that with other than standard seat coverings.

The 2002 Ranger (Lucy because it's Red), has clunky shifting and

the gearing is screwy, you are either tacking at 3,000rpms at 30mph in 2nd or lugging below 2,000rpm at 30mph in 3rd.

It has a very stiff ride. I understand it is an off road truck, but this is ridiculous; my Toyota extra cab with leaf springs didn't ride this rough.

The heater blows heat on your shins and knees while your toes freeze in our cold Vermont winters.

'93 Ranger got 18-20mpg '02 Ranger

15-17 tops mileage varied for both depending on weather almost more than type of driving.

02 Ranger is loud compared to the '93. At first I kept thinking I had left the slider window open, but it's just a noisy truck (some of it could be due to lack of carpeting, but not all of it).

The front instrument panel where the radio, heat controls are located has a thin coat of some spray on rubber like material. It got a small scratch in it and is now peeling off (this gives me something to do at long traffic lights).

The defroster/heat doesn't have an inside verses outside cycle and if you are already driving when you start up the defroster or heater on a cool or cold day all the windows instantly fog up and you are running blind.

Brakes in wet weather act very weird, like there are no brakes when you press gently, but when you press a bit harder I bounce my dog off the windshield.

I also don't like the fact that the directionals don't wrap to the side of the vehicle in the front.

The twist down rear seats mounted on the back wall of the cab take up so much room it's like there isn't an extra cab. I like the ease of access with the 4 doors (don't have to climb over the seat to reach stuff stored in the back) but I can barely get golf clubs back there.

I also don't like the fact that they put a governor on the engine (at 90mph)

and don't volunteer that information when they sell it too you. After the first 6 months break in period I just had to see what she could do, well she could only do 90mph almost 4000rpm then the govener kicks in which is why there isn't a red line on this tack.

If I could get the same thing as the '93 Ranger again I'd buy it in a heart beat, but the 2002 has turned me off to Ford products in general.

I can't believe how badly they screwed up what had once been such a good truck.
