2000 Ford Ranger XLT review from North America
"A four wheel drive truck that could be better"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The Four Wheel Drive Hubs won't engage. This problem first occurred at 29,000 miles. It took the dealer three tries to fix it, the third time they replaced all hub components and ball joints, I guess the dealer was afraid of having to give me a new truck under the lemon law. The hubs are now again refusing to lock at 51,000 miles, I'm going to attempt the repair myself this time. I do have to drive through water and on some really bad roads in my work, but in my opinion 4WD trucks are supposed to be able to stand up to this kind of use.
The spare tire mount rusted out and had to be replaced at 50,000 miles. Noted rust elsewhere on the frame, I will need to pull the bed, clean and repaint the frame if I want this truck to last another 50,000 miles.
General comments?
Except for the problems listed elsewhere, this truck has been reliable.
The Radio/CD/Cassette audio system is quite good.
