1993 Ford Ranger XL SuperCab 2WD review from North America

"Reliable as Dirt, Gets you where you need to go"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Blower Motor Resistor (only worked on high before replacement)

Rear Brake Line.

Ignition (key didn't always work in it as both the key as ignition were worn out from high mileage)

Metal line that the coolant runs through (I am not sure of the name of the part, but it was rusting out so I replaced it)

General comments?

Very slow even with Manual transmission. Requires clutch slippage to get going, you can't just rev the engine and let the clutch out.

Clutch also very stiff as compared to a car, stop and go traffic leaves you with a sore leg.

Gearing very tall for Motor output. Required minimum 60kph to pull 4th and 100kph to pull 5th. Below that speed the engine lugs and the entire truck shakes.

Ride very bouncy over dips in the road and crashes over potholes and bumps in the road.

Steering very light and loose. Precise control of direction on the road is not possible although it is not unsafe by any means.

The combination of Engine, Gearbox, Intake and Exhaust noise can be very tiring unless you can keep the engine under 3000rpms (which is not very often)

I may go on about all the negative points, but the fact is that this truck has been very reliable given it's high mileage. It does not burn any oil and because everything feels so strong and rough you feel like it could run forever if you can live with it.

If you are looking for a truck that is cheap to fix and has old-fashioned technology on it that never breaks then this is the truck for you.

If you want a truck with a "car like feel", don't bother, this is a real truck the way they used to be built, no compromise to comfort on this truck, it's durability and reliability first, what little comfort is offered second.

Get Studded tires and some sand bags to winter driving, handling is hazardous without them. You won't make it down a level street without going sideways or hopelessly spinning one of your tires (if you don't have LSD, I don't).
