As far as reliability, there hasn’t been anything major – just a few minor quick & easy fixes that are annoying. The Ranger, I believe is the best truck you can get. The repairs have not been costly & the overall out-of-pocket expense is low compared to other vehicles. It is a decent truck and will get most jobs done.
The biggest complaint that I have on this vehicle is the leaking window seals that I had to repair twice already and the loose clutch pedal assembly. At only 55k miles, my clutch pedal broke off of the pivot shaft. To replace the clutch pedal would have been too costly since the entire dash had to be removed. So I replaced the pivot shaft with a ½” bolt.
My Ranger makes the same humming noise at idle when it's about 20 out. It also made the same noise when I cleaned the throttle body. I was told it's the IAC (idle air control valve) that acts up.
Wow, my Ranger is 14 years old and has 140,000 miles on it and I have not had even a single problem with anything minus a few worn-out parts and the gas hose, the name has completely left my mind at the moment, leaks so I can only fill the tank halfway. But it does tend to resists shifting gears sometimes, and the tires are rather small, I'm considering upgrading to a 16 or 17" wheel, but other than that, that truck is great. I used to complain that it didn't have enough power for me until I realized that shifting at 15, 25, 35 and so on wasn't giving it enough time for the RPMs to get high enough, but dang, that truck sure has some get up and go when you make it. I've beat several of my friends and perfect strangers in little races at a stoplight or two, perfectly legal I swear (:
