"17 years of ownership-still running"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Slave cylinder +clutch @48k

slave cylinder again @71k

Paint on hood and roof started to peel after 5 years. Ford had big problems with paint not adhesion problems.

Went to the dealership and was turned down for a repaint.

Always have had some issues with oil leaking out of the valve covers. Not enough to leak on the ground, but will drip onto the manifold and smoke.

Replaced the water pump @115k (normal wear item)

Replaced cab mount-rusted

This truck has seemed to go through a fair amount of brakes jobs.

General comments?

Other than the 2 items I listed in the complaint Dept. This truck has been a pretty good truck.

Good on gas (around 18-23 mpg)

Even though the cab is on the smallish side. Its still a comfortable ride.

Ford needs to do a better job in the way to handles its bread and butter customers. Peeling paint is not caused by not by poor car care. Its caused by the mfg not using the correct paint.

So after 17 years of ownership. The truck still runs and has no sign stopping, however it is showing its age.

I have owned my STX 4X4 4.0 automatic long bed since June of 90. Since then I have put 250,000+ miles on it. at 168,000 I had the trans rebuilt (not bad mileage because I use this truck to tow a car hauling trailer with anything up to full size 4X4 1 ton trucks on it). The truck has been completely reliable. I have done normal maintenance; brakes about every 60,000 miles, oil changes every 2000-3000miles until 200,000, now I am changing every 7,000 (switched to full synthetic) still no leaks. I get 23-27 miles per gallon. And about how fast it goes, when I was young and stupid I was stopped in Vermont, (not ticketed) and I had backed out of it before I was clocked by the state trooper he had me at 127mph (what governor?). Anyway the best truck I have owned, I have bought two GMS and a Toyota over these years and passed them both on to some sucker. Definitely built FORD tough!

My Grandfather owned a 1990 Ford Ranger XLT for 16 years... it was my favourite truck in the world, seeing how we drove it everywhere. We put well over 400,000 km on it going to the cottage and back. Ran very well. Had the fly-wheel replaced 9 years after buying it... that's about 225,000 km. That was the only thing that ever needed to be fixed, except one of the tailgate straps.

Was an excellent truck on the highway, lots of get up and go. We hauled lots of wood in the bed and a trailer on top of that, well over a ton of wood for 16 years of abuse.

We gave it away to the teen challenge people in 2006, saddest day in my life :( But we bought a Subaru Forester and this car is amazing. But it won't match the Ranger. It was a 4-spd manual, with overdrive. It was a daily driver, and every day had put 100 km on it easy. Amazing little work truck, great for a first truck. If I could find another one just like it, I would buy it in a split second.
