1999 Ford Taurus SE review from North America
"A reasonable used car for the money."
What things have gone wrong with the car?
My biggest complaint is brake rotors warping and the fact that they can't be turned down. You have to by new rotors every time.
The previous owners didn't maintain the coolant. It was the original stuff, probably due to its low mileage (33,000) I took it in for a flush and fill and they had to do it twice, with the advise to bring it in again in four months to clean it again.
The amazing thing is it doesn't overheat and the heater still works, for now at least.
General comments?
The 1999 Taurus wagon will haul all kinds of stuff which makes it a favorite of my wife. We've put 15,000 miles on it in 10 months with no issues, not bad for a $5,500 used car.
The ride is firm with reasonably comfortable seats and interior that has held up well.
The paint and wheels still look very good. I've always preferred the wagon look to the sedan.
The 3.0 Vulcan motor, while lower in power compared to the cammer motor, is very tough. My 1986 Sable wagon went 178,000 miles with one replaced water pump and one distributor unit. The engine still ran quiet with no oil consumption.
Yes, it went through a transmission rebuild along with half-shaft rebuilds and a front bushing replacement.
The 4 speed AOD is very smooth with 21 mpg city and 28 highway if you keep it at 65 mph.
