1997 Ford Taurus SHO review from North America
"Bmw 5 series in disguise"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Needs work on the AC.
Replaced ball joints at 165k.
Had to do full tuneup at 165k.
CD changer broken at 150k (it had hay in it; previous owner used it as a farm car)
It's limited production so parts are hard to replace.
General comments?
The 1997 Taurus SHO has been a great buy for me. My previous car a 1999 Taurus SE had treated me very well the SE had been such a reliable car and kept me safe in 4 accidents that when I first read about the SHO I knew I had to drive one if the opportunity ever came around.
This car handles like one half it's size it's incredible! That's great for performance but also for safety I have dodged trouble many times with this car.
The engine is my favorite thing, it's fast!! This car is a true sleeper. It's quick off the line but it really hauls the mail as the secondary intake runners engage at 3500 rpm.
It handles back roads with ease but it seems to live for the highway that's were it stretches it's legs.
It's style is a bit like a space ship; while off putting for some, I really enjoy it.
I love pulling up to the line and revving the engine. NO ONE expects this "grocery getter" to put their car to shame and the SHO sure can.
I recommend that if you buy this car you do, because you really want an SHO, not just cause it was available, as getting parts for this car and finding good people to work on them is very difficult.
I added a performance air filter and a turbonater. I plan to add more performance parts as I can, this car seems to enjoy receiving them.
It's a shame that Ford put these cars out to pasture. Now if you want a performance sedan, you have to buy something like a Grand Prix (I test drove one and it's just not the same)
