1999 Ford Taurus SE from North America - Comments

"A good family car"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The first thing that went wrong was warped rotors. They went bad at 60,000 miles, and were replaced again at 95,000 miles.

At 55,000 miles, the vehicle speed sensor was replaced under my extended warranty.

Most recently, at 100,000 miles, both lower ball joints were replaced.

General comments?

Our 1999 Taurus has been a good car so far. I have read about other problems with this model, but my car doesn't seem to be affected yet.

I am an Assistant manager of a local NAPA Auto Parts Store, and can attest to problems other manufacturers are having with there cars. General Motors in particular seems to have charging system problems.

This is pertaining to a review of the 1999 Ford Taurus.

I also drive a '99 Taurus SE. It currently has 68,000 miles on it. It is a leased car that had 3,000 miles on it when I leased it.

So far, I have had the power steering pump replaced (at 26K miles), ball joints (at 55K), tie rods (at 50K), and have had persistent problems with warped rotors, steering linkage, and currently ruptured cooling system lines (the metal ones of course that are "special order").

There has also been a string of other little quirks that my local dealership notes to "unknown electrical problems" such as the door ajar signal staying on, dome lights not shutting off even when switch is in "off position", and radio LCD display not working.

This car replaced a 1993 Taurus. Although the '93 Taurus had several recalls, it was by far a more reliable vehicle than the '99 model. The '93 was traded in for this newer car at 125K and although it looked pretty rough, it was still a very dependable car. I only wish I could say the same for the 1999 Taurus.

I have had my 99' Taurus for about a year and with in this year my power steering pump has gone out about four time in two months and my radio display is nonworking. I'm only 17 and so having a car that hasn't been as reliable as I would like and that is have so many problems at only 60,000 miles is really discouraging. The guy at the dealership said this would be a very reliable car and for the price I got it at it seemed like a steel. Now I'm still making payments on the repairs for a new steering rack and pump which is about $650 was the estimate I was give and making a car payment while looking down the road with a car that kinda undependable.

I have recently wrote a comment talking of my power steering pump, rack and radio display not working. Well lately my dome light has been staying on along with the door ajar light. I thought these problems were just a freak thing, but after reading about other peoples comments and talking to my friend who has the same year Taurus and has many of the same problems I am wondering why this car is not being recalled.

My car also decides that a car door is open when one is not. The dome light stays on and the "door open" light stays on. This usually doesn't last very long, but if it does, we take out the fuse.
