September 28, 2004.

I also have a 1999 Ford Taurus SE and am having problems with the power steering pump. It started making a noise and by the next day I couldn't even steer it at all. I replaced the power steering pump 2 days ago and it is still making noise (whining and grinding). I will probably have to replace the rack and pinion next. I am going to call Ford at 866-436-7332 and file a complaint. Hopefully, if they get enough complaints, Ford will do a recall.

We recently got a 1999 Ford Taurus when a family member passed away. It has 44K. The steering is noticeably poor and tonight it made the most horrid noises and steering is almost none existent. Checking the power steering fluid container...dry... whoa... the manual indicates to put in Mercon ATF, not power steering fluid... that seems strange to me and then I read these concerns with power steering... holy smokes... what to do?

I purchased my Ford Taurus Se 24 Valve in March 1 1/2 years ago. I have so many problems with my car all the way from getting ready to do brake job # 3, Replacing the power steering pump which has led to my rac n pin, transmission flush, now a lot of times when I start my car my car feels like it is 'pulsating'. My transmission is starting to slip and has been serviced for every mile required service warranty. I love my car it has never left me stranded knock on wood, but it is seeming as though it is 1 thing after another. HELP anyone have any ideas? After reading all of these comments I am actually appalled and I don't want to get rid of my car, but I am actually going in to the hole and it is costing me more for repairs then it is for my rent and taking care of my three children!?!?!?! Any suggestions from anyone that has had their car serviced in Minnesota at a reasonable cost I'm a single mom of three and need some suggestions. Get Back to me please @ jlmlemay@yahoo.com All comments will be very beneficial Thank You.

Hello All.

Sad to see that we all have the same thing in common. My 99 Tarus had the same power steering pump and rack failure at 40,000 miles. Very disappointing. Thanks for the post with the Ford complaint number, which I will call. I also filed a complaint with the Center for Auto Safety at: http://www.autosafety.org

They apparently have a class action lawsuit against Ford for Tarus defects. Maybe down the road this will pay off for others.

Regards,

Dave.

1999 Ford Taurus SE. I just bought it 6 months ago and it seemed OK. Last week I heard this loud whining sound coming from the front. It turned out to be the power steering. Took it to ford and they want $1300.00 to fix.

No thanks. I will stick to Honda and get rid of this piece of junk.

To all you people who own ford taurus's that is too bad that ford has let quality slip during those model years, but actually in 2004 american car companies actually superseded japanese and all other cars in initial quality. Also sorry to say it is higly unlikely that ford will do a recall because of how many taurus's might have this problem. As well they are not obligated to do a recall because it is not a safety orianted problem ie steering shafts breaking, brakes failing etc.

My Ford Taurus se has now had the power steering, rack and pinion problem, I'm around 68,000, I have contacted everyone possible, Ford told me I was the first one to complain about this, now I read this forum, before I called them, such lies, I believe Ford is my top pick, but this is really pissing me off, I'm sure a lot of you people have contacted ford, so why should they lie, they said if they get enough people with the same complaints along with the safety commision, if I pay to fix my car, I guess save the receipts, and they will reimburse me, but whos to say I should have to shell out that kind of money, and wait and wait, it could be years for ford to do something about this, I just say no more taurus for me.

I also have a 99 Taurus SE 24v- Purchased it in January of 05' with 45,000 original miles. When the weather turned warm, we found out that the air conditioning doesn't work. After sevral recharges, and diagnostics by ford- I was told it needs an evaporator coil, high pressure line -ect.

Last week 9-07-05; suddenly the steering situation changed dramatically- loud terrible noises & difficulty steering; fluid was replenished twice (power steering) - then a tow to the garage (the problem became so bad that the car was not drivable)!!! Then replacement of the rack/pinion was completed, of course replacement of a line was necessary- and the part hard to find. Ford supplied the wrong part to the repair shop twice, saying "that part has been redesigned three times since that car came out",and also that "no such part had ever been made".

Now upon completed repair I have an airbag sensor light that is constantly on, and no horn. I have been told that the steering column must be taken apart to diagnose the problem... WHAT CAN WE ALL DO???

I will be calling the ford complaint line, and e-mailing the center for auto safety, like the rest of you. At such low mileage there is no reason for such problems!! I like many others cannot afford it, and need a vehicle for transportation- not a car in the shop.

Thanks for having a forum where people can get information, and be aware that others are having similar situations... from Ohio...

I have a 99 ford taurus with 96000 miles on it. The only problem I ever had with it was one wheel hub driver side rear. That's it.

I've been a Ford owner all my life-my first brand new one was a Granada. I've never had problems with any of them that compare to the 99 Taurus SE 24OHV. I just spent the rent on new power steering rack. I've owned 14 Ford vehicles and I've spent more repairing the 99 Taurus than all the rest combined. This car goes away TOMORROW.

OH man this bites! We have a 99 also and today the Power Steering went out! Checked the fluid none so we replaced it. Still nothing! I just hate the thought of having to spend all that money to fix a car that I still owe so frigging much on! Also are any of you having trouble with the inside lights not going off? It use to happen only on rainy days! Now it happens just because! We had this same problem with a 95 T as well! I say we all take our cars to ford and dump the junk on their lots! LOL OK OK just had to get it out tho! FORD you Bite the big one! Shame on you!

Just replaced Rac & Pinion in my 1999 Ford S/W SE. Car has 76530 miles. This work not done by Ford dealer. I was surprised to learn of the many people with Rac & Pinion trouble. Cost to replace $618.00.

I bought a used Ford Taurus one year ago. Nothing but problems. Complete engine rebuild after one month ($2600.00. Now needs a new transmission ($2200.00) after just another four months. These cars suck!!

I think all of owners should should file a class action against Ford.

Please let me know if your interested.
