1997 Ford Taurus from North America - Comments

"Worthwhile if VERY cheap and you know what to expect."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Problems with interior lights when the car was purchased- fuse was disconnected.

Door ajar light stays on most of the time, goes off only randomly.

Power window motors have stopped working several times on three of the four doors.

Bad shifter interlock cylanoid.

Slow coolant leak beginning months after purchase- although monitored, fatally overheated the engine.

General comments?

I can only blame myself for purchasing a car which is now exhibiting the same costly problems as is expected of this model. I am only waiting on the transmission to start acting up...

The car is spacious and comfortable.

The sound system, A/C, heater, and cruise control all work fine.

The car does not have as much power as it used to, especially on hills- a sure sign of a slow, drawn-out death.

Coolant link, Coolant reservoir tank was probably cracked leaking... don't ignore leaks! (And before the import people chime in, this is a problem on some civics too!)

The door ajar light, interior lights, and power window issues is probably caused by the "electronic door hinge" on the driver door. Instead of passing wires through the door this is more of a rotating contact design. I have seen it fail on only a couple of cars, I am thinking because of moisture.

At 100k its due for a tune up. New plugs, wires, PVC valve (and its hose), Ait filter, Fuel Filter, and a seafoam treatment (get at auto store), and you will gain your performance back. The 3.0 ohv (Vulcan can last 300k without loosing power, My Duratec 3.0 V6 has lasted 200k and after a tuneup at 150k it runs like a champ.
