1985 Ford Thunderbird Turbo coupe review from North America
"The first of things to come.."
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Rear-end blew up (gears broke) 51,000 miles
electric radiator fan burned up
replaced timing belt 2x, would jump about six teeth every 50000 miles
lots of interior pieces
headliner has the circus tent effect going. Good thing for the moon-roof.
Ignition mod.
Voltage regulator
air-condition compressor blew a main oil hose
fuel injectors and fuel bar feed line
I know there, s been more, but this is all I remember.
General comments?
All and all I love my turbo coupe. It's the only car I've every bought brand new, mostly for looks and performance, oh and 25mpg was nice. I traded a 76' trans am in on it, the decision wasn't hard the power and mileage sold me. And also it would blow the doors off my old smog dog 76'Trans am with it's 400 Pontiac anchor motor, maybe with 185 hp getting 8-10 mpg.I'm in smog capitol California
I must say it was perfect til it turned 50,000 miles, then it started to self-destruct.The interior fell apart, door panels & trim. The car has been semi retired for the past eight years.
I'm an auto-body painter at a GM auto dealership for the past 10 years, so I know 1st hand how American cars only last about five years, just about when the payments are done. Over the years it's had it highs and lows. Its been slammed with Kamei X1 ground effects, wheels & low profile tires, Koni shocks and lots more.
But for the last 10 years it's stripped down and primed for a trick paint job, someday. The Kamei kit went in the garbage and I put it back to stock height.
You might say it's been on the back burner for eight years, now it's a project, having to do a complete restoration, from the ground up. Well at least it will still be a one owner car.
