1995 Ford Windstar GL review from North America
"Good vehicle for $13,000"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
First and foremost the head gaskets. The front gasket I replaced at 105,000 miles due to outright failure. The rear one I replaced at 126,000. The gaskets themselves were not at fault, they were overtorqued according to the way they appeared. The torque converter is also a problem due to the PCM lowering the engine idle from 1000 to 750 rpms if the vehicle sits at idle for very long. Considering the converter has lasted 172,000 miles and I'm going to replace it this month I'm satisfied with its performance. CV axles, bearings and struts will also be replaced with the torque converter.
General comments?
Vehicle has been quite dependable. Most vehicles generally are if their de-engineered or obvious QCs are checked. Whoever assembled these 3.8 engines had absolutely no concept of how important torquing a head gasket is. As far as quality of ride goes the van has been quite pleasant to ride and drive. All three of my kids have taken their driver's tests in it. I suppose at this point its part of the family.
