Nothing to date.
Car has surprised me quite a bit, I has much more power than my previous Metro. It also seems to handle better. I was quite surprised last night when I was coming back from the store a Ford ZX2 pulled up beside me at the redlight reving its engine.. I don't know what I was thinking but I floored the Metro and at first the ZX2 took off about a car lengths space, the next thing I knew the Metro caught its moment and it was on, for the next four miles we were racing head to head at speeds of 85-90mph. Finally, I guess out of embarassment, the other guy turned off. I couldn't believe this little 1.3 engine was running with a 2.0 Zetec, but it was. I have new respect for this car.
Maybe they were going downhill, with a tailwind.
Also, the 76MPH top speed is probably for the 1.0 Liter, 3 cylinder engine. This guy said it had a 1.3 4 cylinder, so 85-90MPH may be possible, even without a tailwind and on flat ground.
I've got a 95 Metro with a 3 cylinder 1 litre. I got it up to about 85 on flat ground. You have to know how to drive it. Get your speed in fourth and then shift into 5th when you get to about 70MPH. My transmission is still fine too. I love that car!
I have a 96 metro and I'm not sure about the engine but I've hit 90 and there was no problems with the car afterwards.
Hey, my girlfriend's 92 Geo Metro does 115 after I got done with it. That little 1.0L 3 cylinder got a turbo and intercooler bolted onto it. Raw power baby! A whopping 80 HP on 2000Lbs. Not too bad. Let's see how long it takes her to tear it apart.
Let's set some things straight here people. I have a 95 geo metro pimp mobile. It's the racing version with the big 1.3 4 cylinder. The speedo only goes to 90 and I've had it pinned on a slight downward slope. That was it. It didn't have anything left in it. There is no way that the Escort was giving it all it had. It would have killed you.
A new Metro with a 1.0 and a 5 speed will top out at 89 miles an hour, according to Car and Driver Magazine. I believe a 1.3 liter version could theoretically hit about 100 even.
I rented a 2001 Suzuki Swift (Metro) a few months back, and although it took a while it did do 90 mph on flat land (rt 75 in FL).
I had a '90 and a '91 and they both went over 90mph with the 5 speed. As the other person said, you have to run it about as fast as it gets in 4th and then shift to 5th. It will pull over 90 with no headwind. But hey, this car is designed to be a commuter, not a high speed sports car.

I just test drove a 1998 Metro LSi 4 door today with automatic and am going back tomorrow to buy it. I test drove it for two hours and ran great!!! I topped the speedo out with A/C on. Last time I looked it was doing 85 mph and handled like a dream. No wind at my back, either! Surprising PEP for a four banger Suzuki engine/ auto. I am a retired General Motors Master Tech and retired before this year was built, but I remember seeing many of the earler ones lasting 200,000 plus miles (with proper care) with no major problems. It beats heck out of my Nissan pickup for comfort and will undoubtably get much more mileage. Environmentally friendly also. Much more American to save fuel than show off with a big, gas wasting SUV or jumbo unnecessary gas guzzler.
I have a 98 Geo Metro hatchback and it runs beautifully and has required very little beyond regular maintenance. I've put 80,000 km on it, 40,000 km were highway driving. I regularly go 120/130 km/hr and it loves to embarrass other large and fast cars. It would be nice to have split rear seats, but... it's a great car.
I had a 95 Geo metro, and it was the best car I've ever had. It was a delivery car before I got My hands on it, it had it was at 19,000 miles on it when I sold it, and it still ran fine.
I have a 91' Metro with a 1.0 5 speed manual transmission. I got the top speed to 93mph on flat ground with no wind and it still ran great afterward. It really does help when you top out in 4th gear and then switch to 5th. After that I had a whole new respect for the car and got it new paint, wheels, and tires.
Just bought a '94 metro with the 1.0 and 82k on it ($799 usd). This one has an automatic! Previous owner was ignorant of how to care for these and made a few boo-boo's, but I know how to fix these cars. In my humble opinion, these are wonderful little cars! They are made well, and to be worked on (when needed) and they are cheap and simple in comparison too many other upscale models, both foreign and domestic. Don't ask how I know...
Who cares if you cannot do 90mph in a quarter mile... I like 48mpg with ample creature comforts.

I have a 93' Metro with a 1.3 5 speed manual transmission. I got the top speed to 175km/h on flat ground with no wind. And it's true because my friend follow me with an Honda Civic and he said that I was running at 175Km/H It really does help when you top out in 4th gear and then switch to 5th.
