The car has a problem with the rocker pannels rusting and the floor pan rusting on the passenger side and will need to be repaired soon, also the convertable metro has a problem with squeaks from the top, but over all it's a really fun car to drive in any weather and is good in the snow and the rain. These cars are a hazzard if you get hit in one, I know that first hand I was hit by a semi on the interstate in indiana, the driver fell asleep at the wheel and ran over me I was in a 1994 geo metro and the only thing that saved me was hitting the floor when the truck trailer jack knifed and Iwent under it all the way, but I did not have my seat belt on and got a ticket for that. After the accedent the police and fire crew looked in the car and the back of the drivers seat was torn off, well I'm glad I was not wearing that seat belt as the police man took the ticket back and tore it up. but I think if the car would have been 3 inches higher off the ground Iwould have been killed.
A little bundle of fun in the sun.
I had a 93 geo metro wagon it was one of the best cars I have ever owned I got 50 miles to the gallon and it even had ice cold air, but I drove it to upstate new york 1500 miles big rigs and a heavy wind would blow the car all over the road that's the only downside to the car that I have I'm currently looking for a convertable at this time a 91 or newer once again geo metros are awesome cars barnone.
Hello, my name is Robert. I live in a rural area and regularly have to drive to downtown Atlanta, also Athens, Ga. If it were not for the little Geo Metro Lsi convertible it wouldn't be worth the drive. Because of the fuel costs alone. Both Atlanta and Athens are about 65 miles each round trip! Yet I have actually gotten almost 57-60 mpg!!! And it isn't an easy thing to get people to believe this, although true.
It smokes some, but I've tracked it down to valve stem seals. The guy that sold it to me said this a throw away car and not to even bother if it breaks. LOL he decided that the rings were worn out, but I put some engine restore in with last oil change. Then I noticed the smoking and oil consumption are way down, indicating that the valve seals were hardened and leaking oil into combustion chamber. Of course this tells me that the seals have softened up again, therefore not the rings, and it has even compression on all 3 cyl. And the beautiful part is that I only paid $150.00 for it! And in 3 months time all I've done is change the oil.
Yes it runs a little rough sometimes, probably just needs new plugs. I haven't done anything whatsoever, but change the oil and put fuel in it! I'm planning on doing the plugs soon. But ahhh the feeling of a convertible. Top down and cruising. I've actually had it up to 100 mph!! With the air on and audio, that was more than enough to put a big grin on my face.
It's true that of course they are under powered in some respects. However it is more than quick enough for me. It keeps me out off trouble, and that incredible fuel mileage makes up for the brute force some including myself love, but if you wanna race, build a proper race car and go to the track.
But put the top down, crank up some tunes, and it's a blast. People are always asking about it, and women especially love it, and people are always trying to get me to sell it. But it's not for sale, even needing a new top and just basic CD player. A guy offered me 2,000$ for it and he showed me the cash. But like I tell them, why would I sell a car that is so easy to maintain and is paid for, and gets that mileage, and also it's a convertible, fairly rare. It also has the 5 speed tranny.
I have to say I have fallen in love with the little bugger. And I would still have to find another just like it and pay $2000 for it. When mine was only 150$ and I am willing to restore this one. A friend of mine who has his own auto repair business, told me he could get it done including an excellent re-manufactured engine for less than $500, and also go through the entire drive train and make it mechanically like a new car for about $1,800. So with a fresh engine and drivetrain, a fresh set of tires, and a new top it could be $2,500. But it will be worth it, considering how little I paid for it.
And the body and paint are in great shape, no rust. And not been wrecked. But the price he gave included a good paint job, so no matter what that's still a bargain.
And no car payments and my insurance is cheap, and I have a great car like new for so little.
Email robert1yates_1111@yahoo.com, so yes find a Geo Metro LSi Convertible if you can. They're a blast to drive and easy to work, on plus that mpg makes it all worth it.
Sorry I went on so long, but the Metro convertible is one of the best deals out there. I recommend them to any droptop freak like myself. A little slower than others, but they hold up forever and are still a great fun little car.
Robert Yates 1991 Geo Metro Lsi convertible
P.S.they are becoming rare and increasing in value. I'd like to buy 50 of them, fix them up, and when gas hits 4-5$ per gallon, people would pay anything to get a fun economical convertible to commute with. Plus it has a good sized trunk even with the top down. Check them out. Robert.
Dear Robert. You can get a brand new top in several different colors at Autotop-superstore.com for under $200.00.
This is my 2nd GEO Metro 91 XFI 2 door - but this time I got the 91 convertible, and I purchased it on e-bay! It was very reasonable. I took the train to DC (for $34) and my brother drove me up to PA.. I paid for the car and drove it back to Illinois. Great mileage and great fun; top down all the way. OH and even with the $$ gas I think the tolls and the gas came out about equal!!
Great runner - you definitely can get out of the way of larger cars - it has the off the line get up and go. also.. I have stick on both vehicles. love it!!!
I own a 1994 Metro and will not be without one in my driving arsenal again. I bought it broken and found it was very inexpensive to repair. (I did the work myself with simple tools) It needed a head gasket and I removed it, took it to the shop on the back of my motorcycle. I think I spent less than a hundred bucks and it was back on the road. I drive it pretty hard and get 40 miles per gallon. I need to sell this gem because next week I get a 91 LSi rag top. It is broke and should be a blast to restore to like new condition. Maybe it will run about 500 to make a new ride out of it. If you don't own one yet I'll see you on the road cause it will not be at the gas station- glug, glug!A true democratic car!
I just bought a 91 metro conv. and just love it. The gas is now at $3 and my Honda Valkyrie only gets 33mpg. Right out of the chute I'm getting 40-45mpg (I drive it hard at 65-70mph) and can save miles on my bike for pleasure, like the GEO isn't!It's been abused and worth restoring, only a top, and got one coming from JC Whitney $281 shipping n all. Quite a change from my previous Muscle cars SS's n GTO's, but that's not what I got it for, economy and its cute.rabbit76009@yahoo.com, Love to here other stories n advice.
I just picked up a 1990 LSI convertible. The car sat for a couple of months with the top buried in the back boot. When I tried to pull the top up towards the windshield is when I saw the top front frame that attaches to the wind screen was broken away from the side rails. The hard plastic was actually broken at the bolt holes, also I could not pull the top all the way forward to the windscreen to attach it. I thought I could just attach it and go my merry way. The top is in very good condition, with no rips, tears or fogged out rear window. Does it need to stretch out under some heat to be able to pull it into the window? My other question is, since I never owned one of these cars and I don't have the owner's manual, what is the little black button under the emergency brake handle on the center console. I put new plugs in the car and it runs quit well. Everything works and I have driven it around the shop parking lot and it is very peppy. I do have to pull the top up though so I can drive it in Pennsylvania weather. Any help would be appreciated. Richard.
GEO Conv
There is a brace on the convertible top that has a "Snap/Strap" to hold it in place. To raise the top, I had to Un-Snap the strap and then close it. It was stated in the instructions that came with the new top. Hope this helps. hint... you might remove the REAR hold-down screws and give it some slack with the brace loose then re-screw it with the top fastened, snap the brace AFTER you re-attach the screws. I used "Stainless", new screws from Home Depot.
I'm looking to buy a Geo Metro convertible. I live in North Florida, and if anyone nearby is willing to sell one for under $3,000, let me know at (334) 332-5821. Thanks!
My name is Mikey, I have several Geo Metros, and a couple of Suzuki swifts gt's I have done a complete swap of engines to make a super Geo. Still maintain 45 mpg with the 1.3dhc will scare you. I have a couple of low mileage 3 cyl. trannys and
other assorted parts. looking for some geos that need engines or trannys to rebuild. also have a 91 conv. automatic that has 90k miles on it. needs only some trim, no rust runs great. I am in s. e ohio. I don't understand why folks say underpowered, tuned right I can burn tires off and last ticket was 85. had no Idea was going that fast. Whoops. Mbartoe@dragonbbs.com.
My top on my Geo Metro Convertible doesn't make a sound... all you have to do is tighten the little black latches, and it will be quiet. I know that from experience.
I bought my Geo Metro Lsi convertible new in 1991 and still have no intention of parting with it after 17 years. 2nd cars have come and gone but my Lsi is still my baby.
I have 125,000 miles on it and have replaced tires, 2 5-speed transmissions, 2 tops, 2 mufflers, and repaired some rocker panel rust but that's all besides regular routine maintenance.
Recently the driver's side seat belt receiver fell apart and now some intricate pieces are missing. I'm having a difficult time finding a receiver and would take the entire seat belt unit, even though I don't need it, just to get the receiver.
I see that there was a recall on defective release buttons on receivers some years back, but did not receive that notice, and now I have the problem.
Anyone out there have a suggestion?
Pete
