Yeah, I don't understand it. I loved the Geos. Why would GM get rid of its best brand? Someone told me that the CEO wanted to phase them out because he thought young people should drive "good used Buicks". Well, last time I checked, not many young people want to do that.
My 1991 Geo was also making crunching sounds while in reverse. It was also stalling and the check engine light was coming on. My husband solved the problem by tightening up the transmission bolts and tightening the bolt on the distributer cap. Apparently they had loosened themselves on rough roads. One on the transmission bolts had even fallen out. It is all better now. Long live my Geo. Viva la Geo!!!
"Why would GM get rid of it's best brand?"
It wasn't totally gone, it was just reintegrated with Chevrolet.
Geo was reintegrated with the Chevrolet brand a few years ago and now, worldwide, Chevy includes cars from defunct Daewoo, Suzuki and so on.
Funny thing is Chevy is GM's strongest brand by far and may be one of the few survivors when GM starts selling/closing down brands as it did with Oldsmobile.
I have kicked myself for passing up a MINT Geo Metro with only 30,000 miles a few years ago. Since then I have encountered a number of people who own these exceptional and very economical little cars. One was a salesman at an import car dealership who had 150,000 miles on his Geo with nary a problem. Another was a lady who drove 100 miles each day (round trip) to work. Her car had 214,000 miles on it with very few (and very minor) problems. As one comment so aptly put it, simplicity is often the best way to go to save money and have reliable transportation. I don't think the Geo Metro could have done any better in that respect. My congratulations to those of you smart enough to snap one up when you could.
Look folks. A Metro is a SUZUKI MOTOR CORP. vehicle. They are no part Chevrolet except the emblems. Don't let the manufactures pull the wool over your eyes. Raise the hood and look to see who made the vehicle. I say, call a Honda, a Honda and a Suzuki, a Suzuki, ETC. The auto world should be prosecuted for false advertisement.
