1997 GMC Jimmy SLS review from North America
"A nice car to own if your best friend is mechanically inclined"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
My brakes failed at 109,205 miles. Replaced them they then failed again at 113,000.Just 3 months after I had replaced them. I replace brake pads about every six months now. Was told that GM knew of the problem with the premature brake wear. Ball joint failure on both driver and passenger sides at 116,000 miles. Was told that these vehicles eat the front end parts. 117,351 miles replaced U-joints. 118,000 had to fix anti lock brake wheel sensors. Tires had rubbed through the ABS sensor wires. Poor design flaw. 118,500 had to replace rear wiper motor. Very costly repair. 121,000 miles Back to the front end parts. Had to replace shocks. Not too expensive. 125,000 miles replaced transmission fluid due to metal flakes in the transmission fluid. 130,000 miles. Vehicle had to serviced due to extreme misfiring of the engine. Dealership could not find problem..131,000 miles car was in the shop for the same thing. Replaced Distributor cap and flushed the fuel system and changed fuel filter. 137,447 miles Engine is still missing. Took the Jimmy in again to be looked at. Discovered it was clogged fuel injectors.$100.00 cleaning Jimmy runs better than the day I bought it..
General comments?
The 4.3 liter is not too shabby of an engine. Has excellent get up and go and has awesome passing power. Seats are very comfortable and roomy. Driver controls are in very accessible reach. However they are very poorly lit. The security lights when you exit the vehicle stay on for a considerable amount of time. You sometimes have to go out or look out the window because sometimes they don't go out. If you have key less entry be careful not to push the unlock button twice because your tailgate releases also and if you don't catch it and you are away from your vehicle for a while your vehicle will be dead if you are gone away too long..
