1988 GMC Sierra SLE review from North America
"Best trucks period.."
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Transmission overhaul due to previous owner hauling over-sized trailer 150,000miles.
Starter 175,000miles.
Regular maintenance.
General comments?
These are great trucks period, there truly a wolf in sheeps clothing. For any vehicle, especially a pickup, it corners great. 0-60 around 6 to 7 seconds the spedometer only goes to 85 and it burries the needle extremely easily. Mine being a regular cab, longbed there isn't much weight on the rear so you can break the tires loose really easy. while driving a relatives new Dodge ram pickup with the new 5.9L V8 the acceleration is good, but not as good as one of the older GMCs with the 350. I have a flowmaster exhaust, K&N air intake, and filter, and got the engine bored out.
GMC went with the KISS motto "Keep It Simple Stupid"
The bench seat can become uncomfortable on trips over three or four hours, but the interior is very roomy when you have a bench seat.
The older GMCs' can take a brutal beating. After 15 years the truck rides
smooth, and the frame is straight and strong. The starter went, but thanks to the huge amount of room under the hood, they aren't hard to replace at all.
The transmission was overhauled due to the previous owner launching a 27foot cabin cruiser on a regular basis and hauling it cross country.
I wouldn't hesitate to drive this truck cross country, and with the way the truck looks and runs now, I expect to get another 200,000mi. on top of the 215,000 already on it.
And please don't get a FORD (you'll be sorry if you do).
