I have a 1999 GMC Sierra and for the most part it is a great truck. My Issue is with the Security light coming on while driving and once vehicle is shut off it won't start for about fifteen minutes. I had this problem in June of 04 and had the ignition and lock cylinder replaced. and although it fixed the problem it cost me $500 to do. Here it is October (only four months later) and I am having the same problem all over again. This is getting ridiculous and very inconvenient. The part is covered by warranty, but I am jumping through hoops dealing with GM to fix it. They are trying everything possible to get out of it. Hopefully this will be the last time I have to deal with this.
I bought a 99 GMC sierra truck, 1/2 ton, The motor just recently started knocking. There was no warning and the oil pressure guage had always fluctuated, I was told this was normal, when I mentioned it, with the test drive. I have always had the oil changes and maintained every 3,000 miles.
I did wind up haveing to fix rear seals and brakes. There was absolutely no reason for this to happen. I had an extended warranty on it, and was supposed to be covered, then to my surprise, the dealership said I had to have receipts for all the oil changes since I bought the truck or they would not honer the contract. I still owe 18,000 dollars on it. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone have any ideas for me? bljrh51@yahoo.com.
I have a 2001 Sierra 1500 with 89,000 miles and it has been pretty reliable mechanically - none of the aforementioned problems. The corrosion protection however has been another story - rusty chassis and the bottom seams of the doors rusting in less than 3 years from new (no seam sealer at the factory). I work my truck pretty hard - towing a large boat frequently.
The boat dealer I buy my boats from runs Suburbans - towing boats of all sizes many many miles. He owns 4 suburbans - towing with them to between 300,000 miles and 350,000 miles - then he puts a plow on them. He just retired a suburban from towing duty with 465,000 miles on the original drive train - now he plows with it.
I was the owner of a '99, until a illegal, unlicensed, and not insured "driver" hit it. Generally, it drove exceptionally well. For a truck of its size, the brakes lasted a reasonable amount of time. As to be expected, a few problems were encountered (such as the exterior door handle broke.) Overall, I was pleased with the vehicle; in fact, I plan to purchase another.
Side note: my brother had a Toyota that had a cracked block. Six months at the dealership, the dealer finally repaired it with a new engine.
I have a 99 GMC Sierra four wheel drive.
Have had the steering clunking noises for the last 15,000 miles.
The ABS unit failed at 22,000 miles. I was told by a candid GMC mechanic that it should had been recalled as they pretty much all fail.
The drive line clunks badly at times.
The truck has never been off road and is gently used. It now has 42,000 miles and I use it sparingly as I don't have confidence in the vehicle.
Hard to believe GM now wants our tax dollars to bail them out. With enough crooked politicians on their payroll they will likely get the money. I doubt it will keep them in business however. Poor quality catches up with you sooner or later.
I have a 2007 GMC Sierra with 27,000+ miles and a nasty driveline clunk. GMC says it is normal and won't even look at it to try to fix it (still in warranty). They say it is normal nothing will happen to it. I just don't understand why they don't have to be honest up front. This problem has been around for years (1999) and they can't or won't redesign it. I am looking for other people who have the same problem to start a class action suit against GM for nonconformity and faulty design. Please email me at cmj1718@msn.com.
