The reason for me writing this review is to refute all of the negative reviews and comments regarding this truck. I will agree the Sonoma does have its flaws, but overall this has been a great vehicle. I'll start with the bad before discussing the good.
First off, this truck is SLOW!! I've become used to this over time and I didn't buy the truck for performance reasons. For those who have a need for speed or require even the slightest amount of pep in their vehicles, this truck is not for you. The acceleration is extremely boring and inadequate. Totally unacceptable when being compared to other vehicles on the road. After fitting a cold air intake in place of the maze of pipes and ducts breathing air into the engine I have noticed little to no change in performance. (should have bought the 4.3) Any suggestions?
Gas mileage is another complaint I have with my Sonoma. In my opinion, mixing a 120 horsepower 4 cylinder engine with a 4:10 rear axle and P235/55R16 tires was not an engineering marvel. At 66-70mph the engine is revving between 2600-2700rpms. This has not had a positive effect on my gas mileage. The best I have ever managed is between 21 and 23mpg on average. Not at all good for a 4-cylinder. I've heard of full sized Silverados and Sierras getting 21mpg. I've been told that a toneau cover will help with this problem. Is this true?
My last gripe with the Sonoma is the room in the cabin or lack of. I will admit that I am a tall individual (6'2) and this truck does not fit me well. Despite my height I have had smaller passengers also complain of being cramped. I own the regular cab so the seats do not recline. This is not a winning feature with passengers especially on long trips. The
upholstery and controls have held up well however and I have no complaints.
And now, the reasons I have grown to love my Sonoma are as follows:
Like mentioned above, I have had the plugs and wires replaced once already and the main seal repaired. Other than these dilemmas, this truck has been trouble and maintenance free. I have never had a problem starting this vehicle, even on the coldest Michigan mornings. The engine does rev high, but does it smoothly and without misfires or any roughness. The interior noise is virtually non- existent. All of the electronics, controls and A/C all still work perfectly without any troubles. Most importantly, I will have to admit that I have not taken the best care of my little truck. Regular (well, almost anyway) oil changes and the occasional can of injector fluid is all the maintenance I've found to be required.
To sum up my review of the Sonoma, I would call it a great vehicle for those looking for a cheap, reliable pickup. I bought this truck to haul my bike and to make my long daily commute to work. For these two requests, the truck has fulfilled my needs entirely. My prediction will be a few more years of trouble-free performance and bad gas mileage. I'll keep this truck until it dies.
Before putting a cover on your truck, try running with the tailgate either removed or at least opened. That will give you better mileage improvement than any box cover and it is free.
You might consider replacing the oxygen sensor to improve your mileage. It is not a big expense, they do wear out, and when they wear out the mileage suffers immensely.
