This is an amazing piece of machinery from GMC. From the 4.3L, inter-cooled, turbo charged V6 to the 700th overdrive transmission, to the all wheel drive, to the p245/50zr16 tires. It's all about the performance baby!
Even for being an SUV, it handles almost as well as my 87 Pontiac Trans Am GTA, but this SUV will out accelerate my GTA (the GTA has a 5.7l tpi lt1 350).
All in all, I guess I love this truck! :-)
Personally I agree with most of your comments. But don't be blinded by love. I have owned a typhoon and was forced to sell it because overall it really is a fast great looking pile of crap. I babied the truck from day one and got nothing but problems. I am still a Typhoon lover but be honest, they are more of a pain than anything else.
Owned a '93 phoon since new, I appreciate the performance and the uniqueness of this vehicle. It is still the fastest factory built SUV except for some obscenely expensive conversions (Mercedes AMG).
It is not an easy car to work on, even the most mundane operations e.g. greasing the front drive shaft, changing plugs, setting timing etc.
Also from what I have read, is that total performance output can seriously damage the engine and drivetrain which are borderline for this type of driving. Since I don't, I have had no problems although the engine was replaced under warranty at 3k miles and so far at 17k it runs great.

My 93 Typhoon is extremely quick, and responds well to upgrades. I currently have a performance chip, turbo headers, 3 inch downpipe with full exhaust, fender well cold air intake, extrude hone intake manifold and 70 mm throttle body, upgraded intercooler and tubing with induction scoop, higher lift and higher duration cam setup, ported and polished heads, forged aluminum pistons with an 8.5:1 compression ratio, forged connecting rods, larger injectors, and a Garrett T-3 turbocharger with a manual boost controller. Camaro SS 17x9 inch wheels and Z-rated 40 series tires round out the package. I have had minimal problems with the Typhoon, and I love smoking turbo Porsches and Vipers in my SUV!
My typhoon sucks.
I'm on Typhoon #3. I wouldn't keep buying them if it wasn't such a sweet truck. I guess they wouldn't keep stealing them if it sucked.
I purchased a 92 Typhoon new in Nov. 92. I found the performance quite exceptional for a 92 era truck. All was good owning and driving the truck when it was not in the dealer for poor driveability problems and worn front half shafts. Nothing could be done at the time for the driveability. The front half shafts were replaced 3 times in 10 months. The transmission grennaded itself at 11 months. The dealer replace it with a softer shifting 93 trans, which really hurt performance and driving pleasure. I sold it 1 week later since it ran like a $25000. Jimmy. I still remember the GREAT times in it, but would not want to go thru all the misery again. It was a great idea at the time, but very under engineered for reliability. I referred to it as my all wheel drive Grand National!
I bought my typhoon a year ago. it had 160,000 miles on it, with no problems, and using mobil 1. I have since put another 20,000 miles on it. there has been no trouble with the truck, and I love it. until a piece of the intake tube gave way and demolished the turbo. I have since replaced it with an upgraded turbo, and I still love the truck, even though it was a pain to do any of the work on it. my only complaint otherwise is that all of the specialized parts that were produced for the truck are no longer available.
I've have a 92 Typhoon and it rules. I've dumped a lot of money into it to get it this way, but its the fastest thing on the street. I highly recommend this car if you can afford it.
I swapped a 2.5 Iron Duke in my Typhoon w/ turbo conversion. Works great.
I too greatly admire the Typhoon and Syclone systems. So, much that at every opportunity I transpose equipment or similar parts over to newer s-10's. So, my question I would appreciate having answer to is= will the stock Ty or Sy 16" wheels work on and give a wider stance to a stock '99+ 2wd pickup?
Thank anyone for their time and consideration to this matter.= spencer.
Man I own a 87 grandnational, a 91 galant vr4,a 85 1/2 mustang svo, a 03 srt neon, a 84 daytona turbo and a 03 ford lightning all of them have from 375 to 635 rwhp. I use micro tech hard/soft ware. And I still just want to own a typhoon or a cyclone I really don't care about all the problems, anytime there is forced induction and real horsepower things break that's what makes us turbo heads.
I don't realy agree with the fact that a typhoon and syclone are sport trucks..I'm more into a 1990 454 ss,93 lightningbutnow we got a dodge srt 10 or a new svt lightning or a ss silverado!!!11111.
I have a 93 TYPHOON number 831. I love my truck very much, but there is so much I want to do with it and not enough $$$$$$ to do it with.
The truck is great, but there are points where you just can't reach anything. The engine is a little too big for the truck.
I had a hell of a time getting to the spark plugs, and the battery is a pain in the rear to charge because of the intake I added.
Oh & the truck seems to be sucking the life out of the battery & I can't find out why. I guess that it doesn't help that I can't find someone in San Francisco that can work on this truck. Well if I can't find someone to upgrade it for me or at least someone to help me, then I guess it's off to a dealership.
I would'nt run out to the 'stealership' just yet, Have you tried changing the alternator? it will possibly be that if the battery is constantly draining.
Also I would maybe call out an auto electrician to check for shorts in the electrics too.
