My head gasket was leaking.
Water from the radiator was going into the engine.
My car was running really rich.
A lot of soot and condensation was coming out of the exhaust.
The car is really tidy, apart from these small problems which could have been avoided had it been taken care of better.
The engine was rebuilt and when I bought it, it had only done 3000 miles in the short time I have had it (4 months). I have got it up to 6000 driving from Auckland to Taumarunui.
A really nice car.
I have a CD stacker in it with 2 6x9's in the back and 2 6" in the front.
Well?
Did you get many ladies looking at it?
Hillmans what can I say about the hunter cars exsept that thay are as reliable four door saloon me and my grandad had one and we found them reliable and fun to drive as any other car on the road mine was a 1.8 cc saloon and I also had a hillman avenger 1.6 I found the avenger more reliable than the hunter because I found it more fun to drive as with the hunter I found it more juicey than the avenger was. still car, nt have it both ways some times I wish they brought it back I just might buy an other one if I had the charnce its more fun than any other car I've driven so far on the road .
Maybe the export versions for New Zealand and Australia were better-built than those for the home market in the UK.
There, these cars were built less well than the Mk II/III Cortina which was Ford's equivalent car.
The Hunter rusted dreadfully, body was flimsily built, doors would soon drop, front strut turrets corroded so struts punched through them.
Inferior to the Hillman Super Minx/Singer Vogue/Humber Sceptre which preceded them.
That's a load of tosh both the Cortina and the Hunter were built up to the standards of the time - Hence they are both very rare today like most other cars of the time!
If you find one of either that was undersealed from new, then an example of either vehicle tends to have survived OK to the present day! I know as I've owned examples of both!
I am the proud owner of a 1977 hillman hunter
she is the best car in the world. I applaud those that remain steadfastly opposed to todays modern vehicles.
A hunter is simple, old fashioned and unpretentious. a hunter like most cars of the period, is easy to fix, owing to its basic components, modern cars of course as we know are cluttered up with all the nonsensical mod cons.
Modern Japanese crap imports, who needs em, so long as I have my trusty ole steed with me ill be right. sadly too many people fall into the trap of buying a modern car when in actual fact something old and simplistic such as a hunter, is a far better investment.
Regards, the metal monster.
Do any of you people know were I can find parts in NZ for a 1973 hillman hunter GL do you.
Two quick questions.
Where can I find parts for a Hillman Hunter in N.S.W?
And where can you buy preformance parts such as suspension and engine components?
I have a 1975 Hillman Hunter GL and I am in need of an engine in reasonable condition. I am in the Waikato of New Zealand. Help!!!
I am looking for a bigger engine to fit a Hillman Hunter.
Great cars, my father owned a 1972 Hillman Hunter Sunbeam which had great accessories and nice sounding engine 1725cc (powerful). My only problem was the front end which had problems with rough surfaces.
Driving it or being driven in it was always a treat.
Pity a total factory reconditioned unit isn't available today.
